• Objectives: collection, processing, packaging and trade of Chios Mastiha,

administration and management of the production, legal protection of Chios Mastiha, coordination and financing of scientific researches for Chios Mastiha, research and development of new products

• Annual turnover : 15.000.000€ (26.000.000€ inc the subsidiary

Mediterra S.A. was founded in June 2002 by Chios Mastiha Growers Association, with the main objectives:

• Establishment of a marketing tool for mastiha (mastihashop)
• Development, production, promotion and sale of mastiha products

worldwide

• Development, production and sale of high quality Greek products
• Development & implementation of promotional activities

To date Mediterra SA:

• has developed a retail outlet network under the brand “mastihashop” which

comprises of 17 stores in

• Greece and abroad,
• has established a food production unit in Chios island, Greece where over

than 100 different products are produced.

• has developed a wide distribution network for:
• Natural mastiha
• Mastiha chewing gum
• Cosmetic products (selling line mastihacare)
• Parapharmaceutical products (selling line mastiha therapy)
• Greek food products (selling line cultura mediterra)

EU Regulatory Status

Chios Mastiha resin, Chios Mastiha oil & ELMA gum granted as PDO products

[Since 1997, Regulation (EC) No 123/1997]

Monograph published to be used as a traditional medicine

(July 2015, EMA)

In 2017 two EU health claims expected:

• “Chios Mastiha contributes to the improvement of dyspepsia”

[Art. 13(5), Reg. (EC) 1924/2006 ]

• “Chios Mastiha contributes to the reduction of Helicobacter

pylori which is a risk factor for the development of peptic ulcer disease” [Art. 14(1), Reg. (EC) 1924/2006 ]

Used in US before 1950 & considered safe. Often GMP audits. Korean FDA approved Chios Mastiha for stomach disorders (2014) Expected approval for oral hygiene effect (2016) Capsules claim : Chios Mastiha alleviates pain in stomach due to dyspeptic problems caused due to GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)
