- Chicago Type – design evolved from research in late 1890’s
by the Chicago Bridge Department to find a patent free design for both land and water based traffic
- Double Leaf – two leaves that span the river
- Trunnion –essentially an axle; bridges rotate vertically
about trunnions
- Bascule – “seesaw” in French; family of draw bridges that
use counterweights to assist in the vertical movement of bridge leaves
