What are the phases of the cell cycle?

  • Pg. 86

– The cell cycle: growth  development  division – INTERPHASE: growth and development; cell spends most of its life in interphase; 3 stages (G1, S, G2) – MITOTIC PHASE: reproduction of cells; mitosis and cytokinesis; creates 2 identical cells – LENGTH OF CELL CYCLE: depends on type of cell; most human cells take about 24 hours to complete a cycle

video Rapid growth; organelle replication; DNA replication; 3 phases – G1, S, G2 Division of nucleus (mitosis) Division of cytoplasm (cytokinesis) Forms 2 identical daughter cells

SLIDE 4
  • 1. In what portion of the cell cycle is a

copy of the chromosomes made? S phase

  • 2. Are cells dividing or growing during

interphase?

  • 3. What happens to organelles during

all 3 stages of interphase? Organelles are replicated/copied

GREEK/LATIN ORIGIN OF MITOSIS

– Mitos is a Greek term that means “warp thread.” Warp threads are long pieces of thread or yarn that are used in weaving. What part of the cell do you think warp thread describes? – “-osis” means “process” in Latin. – “Thread-process”
