  2. TERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT We would like to acknowledge that this Volunteer Orientation for Light of Christ School and the Calgary Catholic School District is being provided from the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta.

  3. The Calgary Catholic School District supports the role of parents as the primary educators of their children. The District is proud to support the theme of service, which is a prominent one in the Christian tradition. Parents are encouraged to participate in their local school communities.

As a volunteer at Light of Christ Catholic School, we feel confident that you will find challenge and satisfaction. Everyone who comes into the school has a valuable part to play in making this the very best learning environment it can be for the students. When we work together, not only do the students benefit a great deal but also our own lives are enriched. Enjoy your time here with us and don't hesitate to let us know how it's going.

  11. • Parking is available across the road from the school. • In the interest of security, please stop at the office every time you are volunteering to sign in and pick up your nametag. • Your workspace will be determined by the staff HELPFUL member for whom you are volunteering. INFORMATION • In keeping with school protocol, we ask that you do not bring younger siblings when you are volunteering. • Please feel free to pop into our Staffroom for a refreshment while you are volunteering. (We ask that you avoid recess and lunch time as staff members often have confidential documents that they may be working on.

  12. • Individual teachers shall decide whether they wish to utilize the services of volunteers. • Volunteers are not there to replace paid staff, but to support and supplement work that is already being done with District schools. DECISIONS • Volunteers cannot use their presence in the school as an ABOUT THE opportunity to dialogue with teachers concerning their own child’s situation USE OF • All volunteers’ work is done under the direction and immediate supervision of a teacher. VOLUNTEERS • Each volunteer has the right to refuse a task if they feel that they are not properly prepared to do what is required • After an initial orientation, volunteers should direct their questions or concerns to the staff member with whom they work.

  13. • Maintaining confidentiality is crucial for everyone working at the school. It is important to remember that children; problems or responses are not to be shared in the community. • Volunteers must not share information about students, staff, or other volunteers with other people. • If volunteers have a problem with a student, they should redirect the matter to the student’s teacher and speak with school administration. CONFIDENTIALITY • If volunteers have a problem with a teacher, discuss it first with that teacher, and if necessary, then speak with school administration. • In the course of their service in schools, volunteers may learn personal facts about students, their families and their problems. As a result, volunteers must agree to keep this information confidential and not discuss it with people in, or outside the school, other than the school administration

  14. Confidentiality Volunteers now have the same duties and responsibilities as regular employees in relation to privacy issues. GUIDELINES Therefore, we ask that all volunteers operate in a position of trust and keep confidential about the students, staff, parents and the school. Please direct any concerns, sensitive issues or questions to the appropriate staff member, and if necessary the school Administration.

  15. • Remember that you are a model for problem solving, decision making, showing respect for others and many other processes. • Volunteers are expected to try POSITIVE their best to build a school ROLE MODEL climate that will reflect the Catholic commitment of the school.

  16. • The teachers and students rely on your support. You are missed when you cannot fulfill your commitment. We understand that due to unforeseen circumstances it is PLEASE BE sometimes impossible for you to attend, RELIABLE however, we greatly appreciate advance notice so that we can make other arrangements. Please call the school to notify the teacher.

  17. • The teachers carefully select the activities they ask you to do with the children. All of the activities are an integral part of each ASK child's program. This means that it is QUESTIONS IF important to have consistency between YOU ARE NOT activities done with the teacher and those SURE undertaken by volunteers. The best way to ensure this is to ask and get clarification.

  18. • Please jot down the child's spontaneous discoveries about an activity, special difficulties or particular insights so that you can share them with the teacher. LET US KNOW • Inform the teacher should problems occur while you are volunteering. In some cases, this may mean asking an individual to return to the classroom until you have a chance to touch base with the teacher.

  19. • Remember our school rules and refer to them when it is appropriate. • The role of volunteers is assistance; not evaluative. SCHOOL RULES

  20. • Upon entering the classroom, please ensure you familiarize yourself with the following safety issues: CLASSROOM • Emergency exits and procedures SAFETY • Medical/allergy issues in the class • Procedures for washrooms, drinks

  21. • During a fire drill volunteers must follow the same procedures as staff, including leaving the building. Locate the closest exit by referring to the evacuation map by the door of each room. Make your way to the soccer FIREDRILL field or school yard where attendance will be taken.

  22. • When you hear the word LOCKDOWN 3 times over the intercom system, you must: 1. Immediately go into the closest classroom or office. 2. Keep away from the door and windows, sit where the Poster with green Dot is located 3. Keep the lights on. LOCKDOWN 4. Ensure door is locked. DRILL 5. Ensure complete quiet/all cell phones turned off in front of you on floor 6. Do not open the door if someone knocks or asks you to open it 7. Remain in secured room until further directions are received 8. If you are using the washroom during a lockdown, please go into a bathroom stall and crouch down on the toilet seat

  23. • Please be aware of District hygiene procedures for handling blood and other bodily fluids of all persons: • Wear gloves (available at the office) HANDLING • Alert administration and/or teacher BLOOD & BODY FLUIDS • Attend to the injury or spill • Wash hands before removing gloves and again after removing gloves. (Use liquid soap, if available)

  24. • The most effective learning occurs through personal experience and active involvement. This means that the learners must be the "doers of the action." They must be the ones ACTIVE to hold the pencil, turn the pages, cut the lines and make the decisions. Please LEARNING remember that whatever the children can do for themselves they should do, even if it is quicker and easier for an adult to do it.
