Schools to Watch Process

  • Submission of a 100 page application.
  • Extensive review and scrutiny of the four domains (academic excellence,

developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organization structures and processes).

  • Visitations included interviews with students, parents, staff, middle school

administrators, elementary principals, high school principal, central office administrators and BOE members and classroom observations.

  • Weber was found to be a model of excellence: putting proven research into

best practice.

  • Weber is one of only 18 middle schools in NYS to ever earn the designation.
  • Weber is one of only 300 middle schools nationwide to ever earn the designation.

What does it mean?

A designated school:

– is committed to continual school improvement. – provides a gradual transition from the elementary setting to the high school departmental structure, providing students with opportunities for increasingly independent learning experiences and responsibilities within a safe and structured environment. – assures every young adolescent is part of a school that values academic achievement and personal development and provides a supportive environment. – has a middle-level educational program with a purpose beyond linking the elementary grades and the high school. Its basic aims are to educate and nurture.

Schools Committed to Excellence Provide Adolescents

  • a safe, inviting, trusting and mutually-respectful learning

environment that offers both physical and psychological safety.

  • academic, personal, social, physical, emotional and ethical

programming that address the whole child.

  • a small school so every student is viewed as an individual

and receives personal attention. When the school population is large, schools should have houses or schools-within-schools to promote a sense of family, to reduce the feeling of anonymity and isolation among students, and to engender with staff, students, and the community a feeling of belonging and personal identification with the school and with its purposes.
