FAQ

  • What if my child has not previously studied Italian?

The course has been designed for non-native Italian speakers. However, to be successful it is highly recommended that your child has completed Year 8 Italian and performed well in Humanities. Italian background and native speakers can also be catered for.

  • How does the program work?

For the first four/five weeks in Term 1, the students learn Italian during their timetabled Italian and Humanities lessons. This ensures that the students have acquired a solid base of Italian and can work effectively through immersion. From week five/six Term 1, they transition to Humanities in Italian. Students will still be following the Australian curriculum for both Italian and Humanities.

  • What attributes will my child need to be successful in Immersion?

While academic results are an important criteria for this program, the most vital factor is your child’s motivation and resilience, as they may struggle initially for the first few weeks when the Italian is delivered more intensely. It is a requirement that students can work independently and should do regular home study to consolidate their learning.

A Guide to 2020 Year 8, 9 & 10 Subject Selections – Success Pathways

How do I choose my Success Pathway

  • Talk to your teachers, ask them questions.
  • Read your subject selection book online.
  • Ask older students that you trust about subjects they

have studied (but remember sometimes subjects change each year).

slide-27
SLIDE 27

A Guide to 2020 Year 8, 9 & 10 Subject Selections – Success Pathways

Why not to pick a subject.

  • Your friends are doing it.
  • Somebody tells you that you won’t like it.
  • It’s too much theory (all subjects have an

element of theory).

slide-28
SLIDE 28

A Guide to 2020 Subject Selections

Other Common Questions

  • Can you change subjects? Yes, but only at set times and only if

there is room to move. The fact that students are now only studying subjects for 12 months means less change is encouraged.

  • Can I study other subjects not offered at Cairns High? No, we
  • ffer a greater range of subjects than most schools that all link

in with our senior subjects.

  • Do I have to do Maths, Science, English,

History/Geography/Civics and HPE? Yes they are mandatory under Australian Curriculum.

Other Common Questions

If I select a subject am I guaranteed a place in that course? No, however it is highly likely you will get a

  • placement. Factors that may prevent you from gaining a

placement.

  • Lack of student numbers mean subject doesn’t run
  • Too many students choose subjects. Decision will then be

made looking at:

  • Your best success pathway
