Break Free from BVD
BVD – What is it?
- A highly contagious viral disease of cattle
- One of the biggest disease issues facing
the UK cattle industry
- Signs aren’t always obvious – costs can
be hidden
- Direct = reproductive losses
- Indirect = secondary diseases

BVD – What is it?
- Persistently Infected animals = the main
source of infection
- The only way to be certain if an animal is PI
is to TEST!
- PIs often account for only 1 or 2 out of every
100 animals in a herd
- PIs shed high quantities of virus for life

BVDFree Scheme – What is it?
- First National BVD elimination scheme in
ENGLAND
- Voluntary and industry-led
- Elimination is possible – already done in
Scandinavia
- Coordination with other national schemes –
Scotland, N.Ireland, Ireland and Wales (once launched)
Break Free from BVD
BVDFree Scheme - How it works
- 1. By registering you agree to all 4 steps:
- Actively engage in BVD control in order to eliminate the
disease from your herd
- Report all BVD testing results from your herd to the national
database (25p for Tag & test; 50p for antibody test from 1st Nov)
- Allow herd status and/or individual animal status to be openly
accessible through the BVDFree database (no details of farm name or keeper are shown)
- Do not move Persistently Infected (PI) animals other than
directly to slaughter (or through a dedicated red slaughter market)

- 2. Set up a BVDFree programme on farm:
- Assess the level of biosecurity and disease risk on
farm
- Define the BVD status of your herd
- Action plan for control of BVD on farm put in place
- Monitor progress – annual status check

individual animals
- Test for virus (antigen)
- tissue (tag and test), blood, milk
- Test for antibody

All test results are uploaded to the national database
