Regulatory Objectives

  • Ensure that house foundations meet the performance requirements of the

Building Code

  • Provide ‘prescriptive’ solutions for house foundations that are not prohibitively

expensive

  • For, residential buildings (low risk?), standardised foundation solutions should

be available so that specialised geotechnical input is not always required

We know that this is an issue in areas other than Canterbury

  • In the event of a 500 year return period earthquake the extent of liquefaction

could be similar to that experienced in Christchurch at the following centres:

  • Gisborne
  • Hutt Valley
  • Kapiti Coast
  • Napier/ Hastings
  • Nelson/ Richmond
  • Tauranga/ Mt Maunganui
  • Wanganui
  • Whakatane
