Let’s get started…

You should have all received a packet of

  • supplies. Open

up your packet and inspect the contents. You should have the following materials:

1 piece of Smart Fab 1 puffy paint pen 2 ribbons 4 buttons 1 baggie of Poly-Fil 1 marker 1 needle 1 “spool” of thread Lesson Plan Ugly Size Chart Stitches Handout Power Point Packet Has anyone seen a rubber duck?

Not all “Uglys” are the same

  • size. You can

decide if you’re making a tall or short critter.

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Step 1

  • Draw the shape of

your critter, doll, or creature the size you’d like it to be.

(The bigger you draw it, the easier it will be to sew. If you want a challenge, make it smaller.)

  • Make sure you leave

space for 2 fingers to fit within any appendages.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Step 2

  • Fold your Smart Fab

in half and place your drawing between the layers.

  • Use a marker to

trace your drawing

  • nto the top layer
  • f Smart Fab.

SLIDE 9

Step 3

  • Choose an obscure

place and draw 2 marks with the Sharpie a distance

  • f 3 finger widths

away from each

  • ther.
  • Draw a zig-zag

between these 2 marks.

These marks will act as the start and finish lines for your stitching. They create the

  • pening that allows you to add stuffing.

SLIDE 10

Step 4

  • Thread your needle
  • Begin stitching ¼”

stitches from one of the 2 marks you made earlier.

  • Using a RUNNING

stitch, follow your

  • utline and stop

when you reach the

  • ther mark.

A RUNNING stitch follows a straight path, but weaves up and down through the layers of fabric.

Step 5

  • When you’ve

reached your “stop” mark, knot the thread.

  • Trim away the

excess thread.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Step 6

  • Trim off the excess

Smart Fab.

  • Be sure to leave a

healthy border (about a pencil width) between the stitching and where you cut.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Step 7

  • Invert your

critter…make the seam side be the inside.

  • Be sure to poke out

all appendages.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Step 8

Add the Stuffing!

Don’t forget to poke stuffing into any appendages first.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Step 9

When you’ve filled your critter to your desired fullness, make sure the excess seam allowance is folded into your critter and then stitch up the hole using a WHIP STITCH.

To make a WHIP STITCH , poke your needle down through the layers of fabric and then “whip it” around the side, bringing your needle back up to the top. Repeat until the hole is closed.

SLIDE 16

Step 10

  • Use the items in your

supply packet (puffy paint, buttons, ribbons, etc.) to “dress up” and personalize your critter.

  • Feel free to swap

materials with those around you, if they have something you like better.
