50th anniversary prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for all the graces you have given Brebeuf College School
- ver the past fifty years. Your care and concern for our Christian Community has been
shown in so many ways for the students, the staff, the teachers and the administrators. We ask that you bless those who had the foresight to see the need for Brebeuf in the middle of an open field in 1963. As we go forward into the second fifty years and towards our Centennial, we ask you to bless each of us and ask that you give us the grace and help we need to come closer to you and to share your love with those around us. We pray that we may always be “men for others” in all we do and say following in the footsteps of St. Jean de Brebeuf and Blessed Edmund Rice. May Mary our Mother bring forward our prayers to you, Heavenly Father, and may we give praise and thanksgiving through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. AMEN By Father. J. Winston Rye S.J., Staff 1971-1972, Principal 1979-1984, Rector 1978-1984

BREBEUF COLLEGE SCHOOL
Dear Members of the Brebeuf Community, It is both a pleasure and an honour, as principal of Brebeuf College School, to offer heartfelt congratulations to the Brebeuf community as we celebrate 50 years of educating men for others. Our community has changed and grown significantly since the original corner stone was laid on May 11, 1963, in a ceremony presided by His Grace Archbishop Pocock, Mr. Brisebois (Chairman of the Metro Separate School Board), Reverend Gordon George, S.J. Provincial and His Excellency, Bishop Marrocco. Our school is truly blessed to have been founded by the Jesuits in 1963. They rooted this school for young men with traditions and values that focus on faith, academic excellence and service to others. This good work continued with the contributions made by the Presentation Brothers in the 1980s and
- 1990s. They continued the work of Brother Edmund Rice with a focus on educating all youth, especially
those struggling academically due to economic or social challenges. We are most thankful over the past fifty years, to have a Brebeuf community composed of engaged and conscientious students, dedicated and hard-working staff members, a supportive and caring parent community, active and generous alumni and religious communities who have been dedicated to guiding
- ur school’s journey in faith.
This 50th anniversary celebration has provided many opportunities to connect with our past, better understand our roots, and envision what we want Brebeuf College School to be today and in the years to come. In September of 1963, when Brebeuf College School opened its doors, the Beach Boys released a song called “Be True To Your School”. There are so many individuals with a strong connection to Brebeuf College School. They demonstrate their pride in our community and the school’s motto Studio Gradum Faciant (Merit Through Study) by applying the lessons they learned to the work they do, by actively participating in their communities and most importantly, by continuing to grow in faith in God and service to others. Happy 50th Anniversary Brebeuf College School Anthony Azzopardi Principal

Edward James barry
A founding staff member and Brebeuf teaching legend (1963 – 1995) Jim Barry is regarded as one of Brebeuf’s finest and most memorable teachers, renowned for his enthusiasm and dedication, his creativity and encouragement, and his success in building men of character. Jim is a coach, an educator, an actor, author, a devoted family man and an inspiration to so many. A dedicated volunteer with Jean Vanier’s L’ARCHE community and the Cancer Society, Jim continues to mentor many young teachers looking for assistance. Jim gave Brebeuf the tradition of Triple Bronze, a fabled hockey championship, a legacy of teaching excellence and so much more. A MAN FOR OTHERS
Rosemary lavery
Rosemary’s dedication, professionalism, and selfless nature have earned the respect of both teachers and students. Rosemary’s commitment to her students is evident not just as an educator, but also through the different roles that she has assumed. Some of these roles included moderator for Student Council, DECA, and Curling. She has also given countless hours of her time in
- rganizing events that recognize the success of students, teachers, alumni, and
the community. These include graduation ceremonies, athletic banquets, retirement functions, Music Department excursions, Alumni functions, and much more. She has been instrumental in organizing events to raise awareness and funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation and for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Rosemary’s longstanding commitment to Brebeuf and to community service reflects and embodies the true meaning of “women for others”. A WOMAN FOR OTHERS

Frank macgrath ‘82
Simply put, without Frank there would not a Brebeuf Alumni Association. No other alumnus has demonstrated the level of commitment and dedication to Brebeuf as Frank has shown in the more than 30 years since he graduated. Upon graduating in 1982, Frank first served on the Alumni Association Executive, chaired the 25th Anniversary celebrations and became Alumni Chairman in 1986, leading the alumni from its infancy to a mature and relevant constituency within the Brebeuf community. Through Frank’s leadership, the Alumni Association created the Brebeuf Futures Foundation to raise significant funds for Brebeuf and helped establish several scholarships. He has also served as an advisor to the last six Principals and continues to be a pillar of the Brebeuf community. A MAN FOR OTHERS
Brother Lawrence maher f.p.m.
Brother Maher always thought about others first and how he might be of service to
- them. As Principal from 1984 until 1993, he was a father figure to many in the Brebeuf
community, be they staff, students, religious or lay, alumni, parents or friends of the
- school. Br. Maher was always available and always supportive and always put the needs
- f others above his own. He provided leadership in so many ways including the
transition from the Jesuits to the Presentation Brothers; most importantly he exemplified the spiritual side of the Brebeuf community. He was committed to the ideals of Catholic education and influenced so many by his caring nature. He had a unique way of recognizing each individual’s personal needs and attributes. Brother always described Brebeuf as a “school with a difference”; Brother Maher made a tremendous difference to so many Brebeufians. A MAN FOR OTHERS
Father j. Winston rye s.j.
Father Rye is a cornerstone of the Brebeuf community. He has held many official roles at the school and within the community but he also remains a loyal and dedicated friend and patron of Brebeuf. He first came to Brebeuf in 1971 as a Jesuit teacher. He later returned in 1978 as the school’s Rector and in 1979 also became the school’s Principal. Father Rye oversaw the transition of Brebeuf’s administration from the Jesuit Fathers to the Presentation Brothers in 1984. In addition to his time at Brebeuf, Father Rye has also been the Principal at Loyola High School, Gonzaga High School and St. Bonaventure’s College, was past Director at The Martyr’s Shrine in Midland, Ontario and has served many key roles within the Jesuit Order. He has continued to be a regular Religious figure within the Brebeuf community. In all that he does for Brebeuf, the Jesuits, the Church, and the Community at large, Fr. Rye does with the ethos, the faith, the humour and friendship of “A Man for Others”.

History of brebeuf college school
The school is named after St. Jean de Brébeuf, a French Jesuit priest who first came to Canada in 1625. Brebeuf journeyed to the area around what is now Midland, Ontario and preached Christianity to the Wendat (Huron) people of that area. In 1649 an Iroquois raid on a Huron village captured Brébeuf, aged 56, and others; they were tortured and killed. Brébeuf was canonised as a saint in 1930. In 1954 his grave was discovered by Father Denis Hegarty, S.J. at the present site of Ste.-Marie-among-the-Hurons, near Midland, with a plaque reading "P. Jean de Brébeuf /brusle par les Iroquois /le 17 de mars l'an/1649" (Father Jean de Brébeuf, burned by the Iroquois, 17 March 1649). Brebeuf is the patron of Brebeuf College School and a role model for students and staff. In 1962, the Jesuits of Upper Canada began construction of Brebeuf High School and the attached Jesuit Residence in Willowdale, a new Toronto suburb surrounded by farms. Built for 400 students, the private school opened with one hundred pupils in Grades 9 and 10 in September, 1963, with a staff of eight Jesuit priests, one Jesuit brother, and six laymen. The first Principal was Fr. Robert Meagher, assisted by Vice- Principal Neil Gazeley. Bishops Philip Pocock and Francis Marrocco presided at the official opening and solemn blessings on January 5, 1964, in front of a large crowd in the gymnasium. Brebeuf's first graduation class in 1967 consisted of thirty students, among them Michael Daoust, who became head of mathematics at Brebeuf. In 1967, the school entered an agreement with the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board), whereby Grade 9 and 10 students would be under the publicly funded separate school system and Grades 11, 12, and 13 would continue as a private school. This arrangement happened at most Catholic high schools in Ontario at the request of the bishops of the province. At the same time, the school's name was officially changed to Brebeuf College School. In May 1983, Father William Ryan, the Provincial of the Jesuits, announced that the Jesuits were going to give up responsibilities for the operation of Brebeuf College School by June, 1984. This decision was made necessary by the steady decline of available manpower. Immediately, Cardinal Gerald Emmett Carter and the staff of the Archdiocese of Toronto began to explore the possibilities to ensure the continual operation
- f Brebeuf. In February 1984, Cardinal Carter's office announced that the Presentation Brothers of Mary
were willing to assume responsibility for Brebeuf College, and would officially take over on July 31, 1984. Brother Lawrence Maher FPM was the new Principal and would serve until 1996. Thus the school is now also associated with the Presentation Brothers. In June, 1984, the Ontario Government announced it would begin funding Catholic high schools beyond Grade 10 beginning in 1985. In 1987 Brebeuf ceased to be a semi- school, although it maintained a culture and many traditions of an independent institution. The school's population grew rapidly from approximately 600 students to over 1,200 by 1992 with many portables erected in the parking lot. In 2001, the Toronto Catholic District School Board announced funding of $23 million for a new building to replace Brebeuf's outdated facilities. The main architect was Rod Robbie, who also designed the
- SkyDome. Under Principal Michael Pautler '76, the Brebeuf community was temporarily housed in the
former Bathurst Heights Secondary School while the new building was being constructed. On January 5, 2004, exactly forty years after Bishop Pocock presided over Brebeuf College School's Solemn Blessing, staff and students began classes in the new facility at the old campus. It was blessed in April of that year. Today, Brebeuf continues to be an academic school inspired by its motto Studio Gradum Faciant to prepare its students for post-secondary education. The ethos remains to form Christian gentlemen who will be practising Catholics, leaders and “Men for Others”.

50TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECTS
Mass A special 50th anniversary school Mass was celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Collins on the feast of All Saints. Banners Large banners celebrating the 50th were designed by Mauricio Martinez and installed along the driveway and in the atrium. Men for Others Mural Under the direction of Ms. Catherine Pieroni, art students have created a striking mural in the main stairwell depicting many of the “Men for Others” initiatives Brebeuf has undertaken in its history. Logo and Flag Contest Yashar Davari designed the logo and flag used to promote the 50th anniversary. Road Naming The driveway has been named Brebeuf Drive and the road in front of the school as Pope Francis Way, in honour of our new Jesuit Pope. Assembly A spirited kickoff assembly started the 50th anniversary year in May, 2013. The Guest Speaker was Michael Daoust ’67, a former Brebeuf teacher (1971- 2010) who was also a student in the school’s first graduating class. Students were also given special 50th anniversary wristbands and prayercards. Athletes of the Year Plaques for each Athlete of the Year were unveiled at the annual Athletic Banquet and have been installed near the gymnasium. Beautification and Art Various areas of the school have been beautified and students’ artwork displayed. Tree-planting Fifty trees will be planted on the property. TRADITIONS OF BREBEUF
One often hears that Brebeuf is a school of “tradition”, and these traditions and heritage help to make Brebeuf a school with a difference. Here are some explanations of where some of them came from and for how long they have been part of the Brebeuf way. Alumni – The school is supported in a number of ways by the Alumni Association, which was founded in 1982. Some significant contributions in recent years have been Brebeuf News Network, the weight room, mentoring, and graduation scholarships. As well, there are many alumni currently on staff and helping to keep Brebeuf traditions alive: M. Rogers ’81, J. Murphy ’81, J. Macdonald ’82, E. Guy, ’82, S. Waithe ’91, M. Da Costa ’92, A. Sabatini ’93, M. Aquino ’93,
- B. Chin You ’98, N. Galatianos ’00, A. Mera ’03.
The Angelus – This traditional Catholic prayer has been recited daily at the school following announcements since 1999. Atrium -- The black lines on the atrium floor mark the footprint of the original building as it faced Steeles Avenue. The brown brick wall at the west end of the atrium represents the wall of the original chapel. Blessed Edmund Rice – The Founder of the Presentation Brothers has been honoured at Brebeuf along with Our Lady of the Presentation since the Brothers took over the administration of the school in 1984. The large banner of Rice in the main stairwell is from the beatification ceremony held in the Vatican in 1996. The Bulls – This became our official team name in 2004 after a student vote to replace “Redmen” (see Crest). Camp Muskoka – Brebeuf was one of the first schools in Toronto to hold an
- vernight camp for its Grade 9 students to welcome them into the school
- community. It started in 1990 under Greg Rogers ’71 at Camp Olympia. Camp
Muskoka is also partly student-run, giving senior students a chance to develop leadership and mentoring skills. Chapel – The pews, altar, tabernacle, crucifix, and stations of the cross are all from the original chapel built in 1963. On the back wall is a piece of the stake upon which Brebeuf was martyred in 1649. Colours – Brebeuf’s team colours were originally red and white. In the mid 1980s, black was added to the original two. Cornerstone – The 1963 cornerstone was saved from the original
- building. It has the letters AMDG on it, which is the abbreviation of Ad
Majorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God), the motto of the Jesuits (and coincidentally also of the Presentation Brothers).
30
Crest – Brebeuf’s crest was designed in 1963 by the first Principal, Fr. Robert Meagher. The top three sections are the coats of arms of the Province of Ontario, the Jesuits, and the Archdiocese of Toronto. The black bull with golden horns is taken from the family coat of arms of St. Jean de
- Brebeuf. The large crest in the gymnasium was created in 1963 and
- riginally on the old gym’s stage wall.
First Friday Mass – The Jesuits have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a Mass on the First Friday of the month has been celebrated faithfully here since 1963. Kairos – Brebeuf’s first Kairos retreat took place in conjunction with Canisius High School in Buffalo in March, 2009. Men for Others – This oft-repeated phrase comes from a quotation that Fr. Pedro Arrupe S.J., former Superior-General of the Jesuits, made in the mid 1970s about the true goal of a Jesuit
- education. All in the Brebeuf Family are encouraged to be Men and Women for Others.
Motto – Brebeuf’s Latin motto is “Studio Gradum Faciant”, meaning “To succeed through study”. It emphasizes Brebeuf’s tradition of being an academic school. Newspaper -- The B Newspaper was started in 1963 by the Grade 10 homeroom of Mr. James
- Barry. It was produced on a typewriter, of course, and was “run off” on a Photostat machine
- nce per week. It has been the voice of student since then and continues today as a professional
looking newsprint publication that is produced four times per year. Single-sex – Brebeuf remains one of the few publicly-funded single sex schools in Canada. Until the mid- 1980s, Brebeuf did however share some senior classes with SJMP. Sports Banners – Brebeuf’s first championship was in basketball in 1965. These many banners give testament to Brebeuf’s outstanding athletic tradition. Stained Glass -- The beautiful stained glass depicting the Blessed Sacrament on the west wall
- f the atrium (and visible from the third floor hallway) was taken from the second chapel in the
- riginal building. It was created in c. 1985.
Statue – The statue that graces the atrium was given to the school by the Brebeuf Ladies’ Guild in 1985. In the old school it was placed by the front
- entrance. It stands proudly at the centre of a school which proudly bears the
Brebeuf name. Theatre Brebeuf – Brebeuf has staged a major play or musical every year. Uniform – Brebeuf’s original uniform was a brown blazer and striped tie. In 1984, the rugby team created a special uniform for their Ireland rugby tour, consisting of a black blazer, grey trousers, and a red, white, and black striped
- tie. It proved so popular that it became the school uniform after that. The blazer was mandatory
until 2000, when a golf shirt for the warm weather was also introduced. The tie endures. Yearbook – “Echon” was the native name that the Hurons gave to St. Jean de Brebeuf. It means “he who carries the heavy load”, a reference to Brebeuf’s immense strength. Brebeuf’s first yearbook was produced in 1967 for the first graduating class and has proudy carried the “Echon” name annually since then.
