Example all in glass encapsulation

  • top glass 1mm
  • bottom glass 3mm
  • no other materials than glass
  • welding seam width less than

30 µm

100 x magnification of welding seam 500 x magnification of welding seam

Temperature cycling test

§ Glass-glass temperature cycling test according to MIL-STD-750, method 1051 were performed at Toptester Ltd (ISO/IEC 17025 certified test house) § Effect of temperature cycling on glass welds were investigated

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Experimental setup

§ Test condition C (-55oC…+175oC), 20 cycles § Transfer time < 1 min § Total duration of the test 11 hours § Sample holder enables free air flow, and does not store heat § Temperature change of the samples were ensured with sensor attached to the samples

Experimental setup

Cold soak on the left, hot soak on the right. Temperature sensor attachted to the sample.

Results

§ Failure analysis were performed for the tested samples § No visual changes in the weld seams § Die shear strength test (MIL-STD-883) to ensure the mechanical properties of the weld § No changes in strength values compared to the tests performed earlier without temperature cycling

No changes in the weld seam (side view, etched).

Adhesive vs. Primoceler welding

Adhesive or frit

§ UV or high temperature curing necessary § Extra material needed: Might cause problems due to fumes or particles § Long term stability uncertain in varying environmental conditions § Problems with hermeticity

Primoceler welding

§ No adhesive or other extra materials needed § Good long term stability and 100% hermeticity § Small heat affected zone (HAZ) § Extremely thin welding seam: as thin as 30 µm possible § Superior bond strength § Highly repeatable process
