Head / Normal Course
CONTENT
- 1. Eligibility Criteria
- 2. Why Offer Subjects At A More Demanding Level?
- 3. Support for Students
- 4. Future Opportunities to Take Subjects At A More
Demanding Level
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Sec 1 students taking subjects at N(A) and N(T) level may be offered
by MOE to take Englih / MTL / Maths / Science at a more demanding level, based on their PSLE subject grades.
- Students can choose to accept or reject MOE’s offer.
- MOE’s eligibility criteria for offering subjects at a more demanding
level:
58
Course PSLE Standard Grade PSLE Foundation Grade You can offer the subject at N(A) A*, A
- Express
N(T) A*, A
- Express/ N(A)
B, C 1 N(A)
WHY OFFER SUBJECTS AT A MORE DEMANDING LEVEL
- Taking subjects at a more demanding level can help students
nurture their strengths and give them more opportunities to broaden their learning.
- When students get to Sec 3, they will be able to take subjects
at a more demanding level. Studying subjects at a more demanding level at Sec 1 and 2 will help students build a stronger foundation for Sec 3.
SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
- The school will provide the necessary support for SBB
students to cope and succeed in the subject(s) at the more demanding level.
- Students are encouraged to continue with the subject(s) at
a more demanding level from now till the end of Sec 2, regardless of grades achieved, since it takes time for them to adjust to the higher level.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES TO TAKE SUBJECTS AT A MORE DEMANDING LEVEL
At this point, if you are not offered to take Englih / MTL / Maths / Science at a more demanding level:
- If you do well in the Sec 1 mid-year / year-end exams, you may be offered to
do these subjects at a more demanding level. Criteria: 75% or higher in the subject; and Positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand. In addition, after the Sec 1 year-end exams, upon meeting the criteria, students may be offered to take Humanities subjects (eg, Geog / Hist) at a more demanding level in Sec 2. Bowen will provide bridging support for all these students.
CONCLUSION
- If you are taking subjects at the NA or NT
level and are not offered to take subjects at a more demanding level – it is okay – study hard and you can still be considered at mid- year / year-end. There are still chances
- If you are taking subjects at the NA or NT
level and are offered to take subjects at a more demanding level – do take up the offer.
FOR ELIGIBLE STUDENTS:
- Students will receive the ‘Letter of Offer’ For Subject(s) At More
Demanding Level in Sec 1 from the FT at the Registration later.
- Students are strongly encouraged to take up the offer - complete the
‘Letter of Offer’ (signed by both student and parent) and return it to the General Office from today to 10 am, Friday 27 Dec 2019.
- Remember to buy the correct textbooks – eg, NA students taking Exp
Maths should buy the Express Maths books
