MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s Return to School Roadmap 1) The plan is due to the state by 8/15 and must outline how districts will meet the necessary safety and wellness/Educational Needs for students and staff members. 2) What is the difference between: Required, Strongly Recommended and Recommended? a) Required: safety protocols that are required to be implemented by all Michigan schools pk-12. They are the most feasible protocols that will minimize risk of exposure to COVID-19. b) Safety protocols that are either Strongly Recommended or Recommended are optional and all schools may choose to implement these safety protocols to minimize spread of COVID-19. All strongly recommended and recommended protocols and actions will not be appropriate or feasible in all settings and should be implemented as appropriate
Phases 1-3 Mi Safe Schools Roadmap requires districts to create and submit learning plans that would align to the various levels of the Mi Safe Start Plan Phasing levels 1-6 Levels 1-3 (All Virtual) Levels 4-5 (In-person/Virtual) Level 6 (Return to Traditional)
Phases 1-3
What Have We Learned Through Our Surveys and Previous Experiences?
Parents
in-school/virtual learning
fine for emergency but not strong enough for full-time learning
just learning (social aspect and well being)
careers/responsibilities and trying to keep up on lessons for students
comfortable with mandates
Staff
family, and students
in-school/virtual learning
return and wanting full virtual
learning
PPE/Cleaning Supplies availability
challenges as necessary
scenarios surrounding potential positive cases
strong virtual learning experience

through the various phases? ○ Phases 1-3: ALL virtual learning ○ Phase 4:-6: In-Person or Virtual ○ Phases 6: All in person learning Phase 4 practices can be flexible but the virtual component will be the key to our success! ★ Awareness of the possibility that students/teachers may be absent due to quarantine OR that everyone may have to go online if we go back to Phase 3 or below means preparedness for a quick and smooth transition is a must. Requirements for Robust Virtual Learning: Attendance, Quality of Assignments, Feedback, Assessments, and Project-Based Opportunities
We Must Develop Robust Virtual Learning Programs As THE FOCUS
INTERMITTENT VIRTUAL
Options 1 and 2 provide the opportunity for quick transition to full virtual learning across the district if the State or local conditions require it.
Bedford Public Schools will fulfill our goal of academic success for all students by providing an equitable, safe, and flexible learning environment mindful of social and emotional well-being for the entire school community.

As we work closely with the Michigan Department of Education, state health officials, the local government, community leaders, families, and teachers, we will continue to develop plans that consider all aspects of how our community might be
particular context or scenario, our mission is to educate all students to achieve their potential.
Option 1: Virtual Learning Option 2: In-Person Learning
Long Term Virtual Option
In addition to the two options, families will also have the
virtual learning environment for students K-12, run by certified BPS teachers.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Over the summer BPS teams will be reflecting on what best practices and lessons learned can be carried forward as we plan for the 2020/21 school year. Teams are working to provide details for each scenario throughout the summer, with more fully detailed plans by early August. Teams will prioritize work to be done across all scenarios in the following areas:
★ Baseline of virtual for all (Due to potential likelihood of students/teachers needing to be quarantined or transitioned to virtual learning)—At minimum, all learning materials/components need to be available in Schoology for ALL. ★ Teaching staff designated as either in-person teachers or virtual only teachers based on number of students selecting virtual option ★ Monday through Friday in-school model for students who desire face-to-face instruction
the home. Students will be released 90 minutes earlier than traditional schedule ★ Full virtual option for students who are not comfortable being inside the classroom ★ Virtual instruction program will include daily bell schedule and student attendance, but allows for flexibility if a virtual student cannot connect or be present in real time. ★ Minimizes number of contacts and potential for spread ★ Allows all teachers to develop a robust, online model and teacher flexibility: Afternoon office planning, and PLC learning teams
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Transportation: ★ The upcoming parent survey will ask families to commit to having eligible students ride the bus or forgoing bus transportation during the current COVID related learning programs ★ Crafting bus routes and schedules and changing them is not as flexible as some of the
Attendance: ★ Traditional attendance marked for students who are attending school in person ★ Students attending virtually will be counted through evidence of 1:1 interaction with their teachers or through Michigan Department of Education (MDE) allowable practice ★ BPS current student attendance policies are being reviewed to ensure appropriate flexibility due to current program offerings
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Bell Schedule/Daily Schedule: Example First Grade Schedule:
Note: Similar schedules will be created for each grade level. Building and grade level schedules may vary based on student need. *Specials classes will be taught in a virtual/online platform and posted in Schoology, accessed from home after dismissal. **Recess will be assigned throughout the day to individual classrooms/Playground will be zoned and available to classroom educators. 8:30 Announcements/Arrival 8:35 Social Studies 9:20 Math 11:00 Lunch for Students (Time will vary by grade level) 11:20 Language Arts 1:20 Science 2:00 Dismissal 2:45 *Specials: Virtual Learning Experience at home
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Health and Safety Precautions: ★ STUDENTS SHOULD NOT attend school in person if they have symptoms of illness. ★ Face coverings are not required to be worn in a student’s classroom, but can be worn if preferred ★ Face coverings must be worn in all other areas
documented reason OR when eating. ★ Those who do not wish to wear face coverings and do not have a medically documented reason should choose virtual learning. ★ Social distancing of at least 6 feet will be practiced whenever possible. ★ Regular cleaning of surfaces throughout the day ★ Deep cleaning/disinfecting after dismissal each day ★ Separate health room spaces will be utilized for students who need to be quarantined briefly before being sent home.
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Special Education and Related Service Strategies:
★
Special Education students are all scheduled in regular education homerooms, either in person or virtually.
★
Special Education Teachers and other service providers will be present virtually in some cases, to provide services and support for students choosing in person learning, and would, of course, be present virtually for those students who have chosen virtual learning. ★ Special Education Teachers and some service providers will have targeted small groups to pull out to provide support for those students who have chosen in person learning, while practicing safety protocols.
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Early Elementary Strategies: ★ Y5 will be a choice of either in-person learning or online Kindergarten (Unless in Phase 3 or below, which is all online.) ★ K-2 will have in-person or online options ★ Hands on learning options during in-person learning will be limited due to safety precautions, but will focus on students interacting with their own, or teacher provided, materials. ★ Breaks, recess, and lunch are built into the daily schedule.
ADDITIONAL K-5 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: ★ Latchkey Updates: ★ The Latchkey program supervises children while their parents are at work. Latchkey is ready to serve families in Bedford Public
public health guidelines. These guidelines will include the potential of limited capacity of school buildings, reduced ratios, and the need to clean and disinfect spaces before and after sessions. ★ During Phase 4, we plan to continue to offer Latchkey that will begin at the scheduled dismissal time. Latchkey costs will be adjusted to reflect the additional 90 minutes of care provided. ★ Please contact the Latchkey Director, Amber Brushaber, at 734-850-6004, if you need to register.
★ Baseline of virtual learning for all utilizing a Cohort (Homeroom) Model for face-to-face learning ★ Monday through Friday in-school model for students who desire in-school instructional
service in the home. Students will be released 90 minutes earlier than traditional schedule ★ Full virtual option for students that are not comfortable being inside the classroom ★ Virtual instructional program will mirror daily bell schedule and virtual students may attend during that time OR access learning at another time, if necessary ★ Minimizes number of contacts and potential for spread ★ Limits hallway/bathroom interaction and lunchroom ★ Minimizes number of people who would need to be quarantined ★ Allows all teachers to develop a robust, online model and teacher flexibility: Afternoon planning and PLC learning teams
ADDITIONAL 6-12 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Transportation: ★ The upcoming parent survey will ask families to commit to having eligible students ride the bus or forgoing bus transportation during the current COVID related learning programs ★ Crafting bus routes and schedules and changing them is not as flexible as some of the
Attendance: ★ Traditional attendance marked for students who are attending school in person ★ Students attending virtually will be counted through evidence of 1:1 interaction with their teachers or through Michigan Department of Education (MDE) allowable practice ★ BPS current student attendance policies are being reviewed to ensure appropriate flexibility due to current program offerings ★
ADDITIONAL 6-12 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Bell Schedule/Daily Schedule: ★ BREAK and LUNCH built into the schedule ★ Clear structure for each class period: ○ Mini-lesson OR Review ○ Work Time ○ Touch base and Closure ★ *SAMPLE SCHEDULE: ★ 7:30-8:00 Arrival/Homeroom Meeting ★ 8:00-8:35 1st Period ★ 8:40-9:15 2nd Period ★ 9:20-10:15 3rd Period with Breaks by Group ★ 10:15-10:50 4th/5th Hour ★ 10:55-12:00 6th Hour with LUNCH PERIODS ★ 12:05-12:40 7th Hour ★ 12:40-1:00 HR Teacher Check-in ★ 1:00 Dismissal Remaining Work Completion *JHS and SHS schedules will be similar, but in the JHS model, students will proceed through their schedules by subject area to maximize teacher and peer support.
ADDITIONAL 6-12 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Health and Safety Precautions: ★ STUDENTS SHOULD NOT attend school in person if they have symptoms of illness. ★ Face coverings must be worn unless there is medically documented reason OR when eating.
ADDITIONAL 6-12 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Special Education and Related Service Strategies:
★
SHS: Cohort model--students are placed in their currently scheduled homeroom
★
JHS: Small groups of students with IEPs will be placed in special education teacher homerooms to get additional support, if needed.
★
Special Education Teachers will be present virtually in co-taught academic sections to support students when necessary. ★ Special Education Teachers will virtually teach their resource room sections, in some cases, as part of their daily schedule.
★
JHS: Students with para-professionals, and those in mainly co-taught academic sections, will be placed in homerooms with general education students. ★ Other service providers will interact with students virtually.
ADDITIONAL 6-12 PLAN OUTLINE/DETAILS: Elective/Hands-on Strategies Phase-in: ★ As warranted by safety conditions, students will participate in hands-on classes while practicing required and highly recommended protocols, including wearing face coverings and social distancing. Extracurriculars: ★ If otherwise eligible, students learning in person or virtually are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.
★
Per the MI Safe Schools Return to Schools Roadmap, in Phases 1-3 all inter-school activities are discontinued and after-school and athletic activities are suspended.
★
In Phase 4, we will be following the MI Safe Schools Return to Schools Roadmap, Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) guidance.
Gives parents a choice: Online or 5 days in-school learning
Minimizes movement and risk of spread for students and staff
Facilitates ease of transition down to Phases 1-3 or up to 5-6
Prepares all teachers for a robust online learning model in the (likely) event we must switch to Phase 3 or below
Keeps students with their assigned teachers/schedules
Temporary arrangement
Provides a clear path for ordering equipment and materials, professional learning, and preparation for families
Timeline provides opportunity for willing staff members to participate in professional development with compensation
★ Level of in-person safety precautions required in Phase 4 of Roadmap includes mandatory face masks for students 6-12 during transportation and when inside of the building/classrooms and for students K-5 during transportation and when inside the building (except for inside classrooms) making learning less comfortable than normal ★ Buildings within the district without air conditioning and limited fan use ★ Student ability/willingness to comply with precautions — especially the wearing of masks ★ Face-to-face learning will have shorter school days for all students by at least 90 minutes to ensure appropriate cleaning
★ Incorporating appropriate breaks/movement for ALL ★ Maintaining safety requirements for ALL with many variables and moving parts ★ The potential for needing to quarantine individual staff members/students for positive cases or symptoms without warning
