  1. Back to School Transition Plan 2020-2021 School Year July 22, 2020

  2. Introduction and Acknowledgements

  3. D146 Transition Team ● Composed of a diverse group of staff and administration, including union leadership ● Considered stakeholder input gathered from three different surveys administered in the Spring and Summer of 2020 ● Split into three subcommittees to review resources, stakeholder feedback, and ISBE guidance documents ○ School Environment, Health, and Wellness ○ Instruction ○ Operations and Facilities

  4. District 146 Guiding Principles ● What is best for students? ● What is best for staff? ● How do we balance safety and quality?

  5. ISBE Guidelines “Starting the School 20-21 School Year” June 23, 2020 Part 3: Transition Joint Guidance

  6. ISBE General Guidelines ISBE emphasized a “return to in-person instruction to the extent possible” among the three scenarios to consider: ● Full Return to In-person Instruction ● Blended/Hybrid Model of Remote and In-person Instruction ● 100% Remote Instruction

  7. ISBE Academic Considerations ● 5 hours of instruction are required ○ Recorded instruction, small group instruction, independent work (if assessed), individual student meetings/conferences ● Appropriate staff planning and collaboration time ● Professional development needs ○ Technology-based platforms/remote learning ○ Social emotional and mental health ● Plan to return to full remote instruction pending a resurgence or second wave of the virus

  8. ISBE Health and Safety Considerations ● Require personal protective equipment (PPE), including face coverings ● Require physical distancing as much as possible (no less than 3 ft. between desks; 6 ft. when eating with masks off) ● Minimize student movement and mixing of students (students assigned to classrooms & teachers rotate) ● Prohibit more than 50 individuals from gathering in one space ● Require that schools track symptom screenings and temperature checks by having individuals self-certify that they are free of symptoms before entering the school buildings ● Require an increase in schoolwide cleaning and disinfection

  9. Stakeholder Surveys Families (June) Families (July) Staff (June)

  10. Stakeholder Surveys July 16 Survey: Families July 16 Survey: Staff

  11. Learning Models ● Hybrid Learning ● Enhanced Full Remote Learning Family may switch models at the end of the trimester, if desired. Students from the same family will be on the same schedule for the hybrid model.

  12. Learning Model Comparisons Hybrid Learning Full Remote Learning Students will attend in-person learning two days Students engaged in remote learning 5 days a a week week remote Students will also attend in-person every other Wednesday Class size will be determined by the size of the Class size range: classroom. The approximate maximum is 16 for Elementary 15-24 elementary and CMS Middle school 25-30

  13. Hybrid Learning: Elementary & CMS Cohort A Sample Schedule Week 1 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday In Person: In Person: In Person: Remote: Remote: Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Week 2 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday In Person: In Person: Remote: Remote: Remote: Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Cohort A Students follow same assigned teacher or teacher team for both in-person and remote learning

  14. Priority Students - Cohort C Students with Disabilities & English Learners: ● ISBE guidance recommends in-person instruction be prioritized for Students with Disabilities and English Learners to the extent possible and necessary to support individual students ● D146 will work alongside families to individualize schedules for students in this priority group that may benefit from more in-person instruction ● If/when increased in-person instruction is warranted, it may take place in a self-contained environment (outside of a general education classroom) Please note: Early Learning Programs will follow the same guidance

  15. Hybrid Considerations ● Keeps learning cohesive and allows for students and staff to move fluidly between in-person and remote learning in the event we need to quarantine a classroom/staff member/group of students ● Reduces the number of students present in the building daily by approximately half and allows us to adhere to the safety and health guidelines with greater confidence ● Allows us to reduce the number of in-person live teaching staff interfacing with students daily and better support staff accommodations. ● Enhances remote learning teaching capacity of all staff in the event that the District needs to transition to full remote learning for all students.

  16. Remote Learning: Enhancements & Considerations ● Enhanced remote learning expectations and instructional framework will be based on remote learning plan developed by staff and administration that follows ISBE Guidelines ○ 5-hour day of instruction and learning outside of office hours ○ Combination of direct instruction and independent learning with small group breakout sessions in Zoom ○ Streamlined learning platforms- Seesaw and Schoology ○ Balance of direct instruction using tangible materials (curricular resources, class books/novel sets, math manipulatives, paper/pencil assignments, etc.) and digital instruction using online resources ○ D146 grading practices ○ More differentiation to meet student needs ○ Regular attendance will be taken daily ● D146 students may be assigned to remote learning classrooms in their grade levels from across the District. ● Dates for material pick-up-TBD

  17. Enhanced Remote Learning: Instruction and Resources ● Math ○ Teacher led direct instruction and small group ○ Curriculum aligned digital resource that has teacher talk embedded and teacher created mini-lessons that support independent learning ○ Teacher monitors student independent work while working with students in small group ○ Online resource adapts to student mastery level of concepts (targets gaps and enhances strengths) ● ELA ○ Teacher-led direct instruction and small group ○ Curriculum-aligned digital resource with embedded teacher led mini lesson videos (PD Committee will review next week) ○ Digital library supports small group instruction and projects ○ Digital resources support independent reading and monitors reading progress

  20. Academic Considerations Priority Content: Areas identified by ISBE are Math, ELA, and SEL. Time will be expanded in schedules to accommodate acceleration or narrowing of learning gaps. Accelerated : Accelerated students will receive small group instruction combined with supplemental online programs to keep students on the accelerated learning track. Remediation: Individualized and small group instruction combined with online programs will be used to narrow the learning gap for students.

  21. Other Instructional and Program Considerations: Part 1 ● If moving to Phase 3-all students transition to remote learning. Some high priority students may continue receiving in-person instruction as identified by individual teams (special education and ELL) ● Calendar adjustments: ○ Remote professional development planning day- August 25 & 26 ○ Move 1st day of school for students to Thursday, August 27

  22. Other Instructional and Program Considerations: Part 2 ● At the request of parents we consolidated to two learning platforms. Students/Parents will be provided training for Seesaw and Schoology. ● Students will be provided training in physical distancing protocols and health and safety expectations. ● Open House-Curriculum Night-Parent/Teacher Conferences will be virtual; Kindergarten Meet and Greet will be in-person and Sixth Grade CMS Welcome may be In-Person if can be done safely.
