International Barley Market

  • 80% of the WA barley is exported to

countries such as China, Korea, Japan.

  • China is our most important market.
  • Chinese brewing and malting market

differs to the Australian market:

– conditions encountered during malting – style of beer produced – adjunct usage

Release of New Varieties

  • Chinese specification

– lowly modified, high extract, fast proteolysis – high FAN, low wort boil colour

  • Market failure in China

– Stirling not well accepted in most areas – Gairdner has problems with proteolysis

  • Barley industry of WA released two new

provisional malting varieties

– Hamelin (tested as WABAR2104) – Baudin (tested as WABAR2080)

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

6

Hamelin barley

  • Background

– Stirling X Harrington cross – superior malting quality

  • Maturity

– early spring variety – high daylength sensitivity – flowers at a similar time to Stirling

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

7

Characteristics of Hamelin

  • Agronomic traits relative to Stirling

– wide regional adaptation – slightly better straw strength – similar intolerance to boron – physiological leaf spotting – similar disease susceptibility – similar herbicide reaction – grain less dormant – susceptible to pre-harvest sprouting

– in general agronomically similar to Stirling

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

8

Hamelin - adaptation

  • Hamelin has wide adaptation

– suited to Agzone 2 & 4 – parts of Agzone 1,3 & 5 – pre-harvest sprouting an issue in other areas

12

Hamelin - management

  • Sowing date

– target last 2 weeks of May

  • Disease

– use full spectrum seed dressing – watch out for mildew and leaf rust

  • Protein management

– target 10.5% protein – non-legume stubbles, use N-calculator

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

13

Hamelin - summary

  • Replacement for Stirling
  • Similar plant appearance & phenology
  • Wide regional adaptation
  • Yield advantage over Stirling
  • Receival at 2003/04 harvest with similar

specifications to Stirling by Grain Pool

  • Receival at ports

14

Baudin barley

  • Background

– pronounced as Bow-dan – Stirling X Franklin cross – superior malting quality

  • Maturity

– medium spring variety – higher daylength sensitivity than Gairdner – flowering date depends on sowing date

  • May, 0 to +4 days later than Gairdner
  • June, -2 to -3 days earlier than Gairdner

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

slide-16
SLIDE 16

15

Characteristics of Baudin

  • Agronomic traits relative to Gairdner

– wider regional adaptation – shorter straw, improved straw strength – similar intolerance to boron – susceptible to leaf rust, mildew and STNB – intermediate to scald – similar herbicide reaction – similar grain dormancy – not susceptible to pre-harvest sprouting

– in general superior to Gairdner except disease

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

slide-17
SLIDE 17

16

Baudin - adaptation

  • Baudin has wider adaptation

– suited to Agzone 3 & 6 – better than Gairdner in Agzones 1, 2 and 5 – early sowing in great southern medium rainfall ?

20

Baudin - management

  • Sowing date

– target a May sowing

  • Disease

– use full spectrum seed dressing – foliar fungicide likely to be needed – watch out for mildew, leaf rust, STNB

  • Protein management

– may be susceptible to low protein – target 10% - 10.5% protein – legume may be an option, use N-calculator

2003 Agribusiness Crop Updates, Perth, WA, 19 - 20 Feb 2003

slide-22
SLIDE 22

21

Baudin - summary

  • Alternative to Gairdner with shorter &

stronger straw, plumper grain and more flexible development pattern

  • Wider regional adaptation
  • Disease management plan required
  • Receival at 2003/04 harvest with similar

specifications to Stirling by Grain Pool

  • Receival at ports (except Geraldton)

22

Unicorn Barley

  • Very early spring barley
  • Very high malting quality

– well suited to Japanese brewing market – Gairdner and Stirling not suited

  • Kirin Australia seeking 25,000 t in 2003
  • Incentives to grow

– pool + $30/t – receival specifications similar to Stirling

  • Manage for protein, skinning, head loss
