slide-6
SLIDE 6 6

slide-7
SLIDE 7

slide-9
SLIDE 9

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Measuring Occupational Health Risk Factor At The Workplace

AEB H&S Subcommittee meeting June 1st 2016 Presented by Mark Zatenko, ERGO specialist

SLIDE 28

Why to measure…

Early detection is important Everybody is affected in a different way by MSDs MSDs take a long time to develop Not everyone with the same behavior and environment will develop MSDs  Take a long time to develop, but are easy to prevent  Take a much longer time to heal, but are difficult to cure

Prevention instead of curing

Musculo- skeletal Disorders (MSD‘s)
slide-29
SLIDE 29

Symptom Progression of MSDs

90% of the early reported discomfort are solved with timely intervention 50% of diagnosed Muscoloskeletal Disorders will never heal completely Unresolved pain or discomfort may lead to Muscoloskeletal illness

Performance issues Personal losses Litigation costs

How to measure

Focus on: work environment, work activities, work behaviour

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

ERGONOMIC SPECIALIST ASSESSMENT Local or remote COMPUTER-BASED SELF-ASSESSMENT PAPER-BASED SELF-ASSESSMENT Site assessment Individual assessment Pros:
  • fully professional
  • adaptable on different
activities and environments
  • ideal for initial assessments
and occupational health and safety program development Cons:
  • high costs
  • takes time
Individual assessment Individual assessment Pros:
  • Fast
  • easily accessible
  • Cheap
  • requires less support from the
ergonomic specialist (but does not substitute one)
  • quick reportable data, easy to
create reports Cons:
  • the software needs initial
adjustment based on the work activities of the given site
  • Can’t predict human factors
Pros:
  • easy accessability
Cons:
  • issues of record
retention
  • Difficulty of merging
data into reviews

Ergonomic Risk Assessment Tool

Moscow, 1 June 2016
slide-43
SLIDE 43

Context

  • Historically BP trained people to do ergonomic assessments –
costly
  • In 2009 switched to Remedy tool - an online Ergonomic Workstation
assessment, that is self administered and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete
  • Remedy is identified as a preferred option for BP as part of an
effective management solution for musculoskeletal disorders
  • Remedy advises the individual on working safely and optimal use of
available equipment: − It objectively assesses exposure and identifies risk − Gives guidance to best working practice and offers self administered solutions − Tracks and analyses the results to reduce risk 43
slide-44
SLIDE 44 44 Decrease employees’ compensation costs, increase comfort & productivity

Convenient

  • Takes approximately 45 minutes
  • Can be completed in multiple sittings
  • Employees can take it anytime, at their
convenience

Requires Minimal Support

  • Rollout is automated
  • Focuses on behavioural changes, not equipment
  • Remedy assesses users’ risk (high, medium, low)
  • Follow-up with high risk employees is automated

Effective

  • Feedback & follow-up is personalized
  • Employees learn to take control of
their own work environment
  • Provide information for adjustments
to your workstation
  • Provide advice to alter behaviours
  • Offer you the option to download RSI
Guard

How Remedy works

slide-45
SLIDE 45

Remedy Process

  • Training sessions for employees where we explain:
– What are musculoskeletal disorders and their main causes – How to complete Remedy – What is RSIGuard and how to effectively use it – Laptop use while travelling
  • The tool is completed by new starters and then every 2 years or
if any change occurs (relocation, pregnancy, change in health etc.) 45
slide-46
SLIDE 46

Musculoskeletal disorders

46 The regions most affected by pain or discomfort were the right forearm/wrist, lower back and the neck
slide-47
SLIDE 47

Remedy process

  • Data is analysed and user is designated as
− High (red) − Moderate (amber) or − Low (green) risk
  • An email is sent to user along with detailed recommendations on how to
minimize risks
  • User implements recommendations and records these on his individual
Remedy Profile page. It re-evaluates the score he will get
  • User receives email reminders if:
− He does not complete the questionnaire − He does not update his profile following the recommendations 47
