700 MHz Clearance

  • Mission: To clear the 700MHz spectrum from UK transmitters and UK Special Events companies. Once cleared

this spectrum will then be auctioned by Ofcom to Mobile Network Operators for use in new 5G networks

  • Why?: 5G requires additional spectrum/capacity. 700MHz also propagates better in rural environments, and better

penetrates buildings in Urban areas, than current mobile frequency bands. HM Treasury will also raise money through the auction.

  • Impact:
  • 14-20m homes will need to retune their TV equipment
  • 100,000 -160,000 homes may need to replace their aerial
  • 40,000 - 110,000 may need to have their aerial realigned
  • Budget: £400m
  • Completion: May 2020
