Construction of Plot

Antigone essentially is a play about polar opposites: Sophocles constructed a perfect tragedy based on a situation without any possible compromise.

  • both central characters exist at extreme odds in their system of beliefs
  • both show the same stubborn, willful attitudes
  • both are unwilling to change, resist compromise
  • both are tragic characters, for different reasons
  • both main characters have a foil character who reinforces their positions
  • both react and counter react to the other’s demands as in a chess game
