Construction of Plot
Antigone essentially is a play about polar opposites: Sophocles constructed a perfect tragedy based on a situation without any possible compromise.
- both central characters exist at extreme odds in their system of beliefs
- both show the same stubborn, willful attitudes
- both are unwilling to change, resist compromise
- both are tragic characters, for different reasons
- both main characters have a foil character who reinforces their positions
- both react and counter react to the other’s demands as in a chess game
