Construction of Plot

Antigone essentially is a play about polar opposites: Sophocles constructed a perfect tragedy based on a situation without any possible compromise.

both central characters exist at extreme odds in their system of beliefs
both show the same stubborn, willful attitudes
both are unwilling to change, resist compromise
both are tragic characters, for different reasons
both main characters have a foil character who reinforces their positions
both react and counter react to the other’s demands as in a chess game
