  1. AnatoliaGreece Anatolia College, Thessaloniki, Greece “Construct a product that recognizes UV radiation and emits Red Fluorescent Protein (RFP) in response” Foteini Kalampalika, Representing The Team 01

  2. Team Roster 1. Christos Papachristou (mascot) 2. Danai Kyriaki (advisor) 3. Dimitris Granouzis 4. Dimitris Gkontoras 5. Athina Prinou 6. Ioanna Deni 7. Kyriakos Zagoumidis 8. Galatia Stefanidou 9. Eliani Economou 10. Lysimachos Papoutsis 11. George Foundos 12. Sotiris Karagkounis 13. Foteini Kalampalika (presenter) 02

  3. Last Year’s Project Worked on improving the efficiency of nitrogen fixing soil bacteria Researched, but decided to choose a different topic 03

  4. 04

  5. Research Ideas We had access to: Google Scholar EBSCO ( E lton B S tephens Co mpany) Host Published books and articles found in Eleutheriadis Library (@Anatolia College) 05

  6. The Chosen Idea “ To construct a bacterium that recognizes UV radiation and emits RFP in response” The Reasons We Chose The Topic Practical Theoretical 06

  7. Practical Theoretical Choose a topic that the genes Greece has a lot of sun exposure were in the kit throughout the year Ordering more genes would take During the summer there is a high too much time risk of sunburn The phenomenon of ozone depletion leads to higher amounts of UV entering the atmosphere Practical Theoretical Due to the Greenhouse Effect the temperature is constantly increasing These issues are becoming more prominent in many more countries 07

  8. Carcinomas and Melanomas Melanomas are usually diagnosed at a late stage Rates at which melanoma is increasing Rates of melanoma in different countries in Europe 08

  9. THE PLAN Ultra Violet Radiation Recognizes Emits RFP UV radiation (Bba-I76500I) (BBa-Jo4450) 09

  10. What We Plan to Achieve Personal Collective use use 10

  11. Personal Use It will be in bracelet form Like “Sunscreen Bands” but with bacterial instead of photochromic dye Or in a cream or liquid form Put on your skin, if the UV radiation is within the threshold turns red 11

  12. Collective Use Be put on solar panels (in the meteorological centers) so the scientists may analyze the response that the bacterium gives, and then can inform the people 12

  13. Pre-Lab Theoretical background  YouTube videos explaining procedures (ex. Restriction enzymes)  Imperial 2009 team-documentary 13

  14. The Lab We used genes BBa-Jo4450, Bba-I76500I and a connector between them We used protocols given by iGem We used the lab facilities provided by the school 14

  15. What We Did Focus on:  understanding background theory  learning how to write a good presentation and posters 15

  16. Conclusions Current achievements participated in a gained poster and new and unique presentation experience experience accumulated background will organize learned how to carry knowledge on bacteria and next year’s team out independent lab procedures better research 16

  17. Acknowledgements The Team The Advisor The Team Leader The school Ms. Kitwa Ng for all her help and support for the creation of This experiment 17
