  11. Online Data Dictionary calls.ac.uk/variables - covers all 3 LSs If you know the name of a variable you can Search by table. Tables are quickly search for it organised by source directly (census year, vital events, etc) You can also browse Search for a keyword the full list of tables or within the variable full list of variables description For all searches you can limit which LS you search using this dropdown

  12. Search results – similarity scores The search results give you information such as table, LS, description and more: This column tells you if there are comparable variables in the other LSs Clicking this arrow gives more details…

  13. Search results – expanded variable view Restriction level Click the + sign to save variable to your own custom list Full description Frequencies are gradually being added to the dictionary to help Similarity score – you gauge sample sizes in this example the variable has an exact match (8) in the ONS LS

  14. Search results – saved projects Choose which list to review from the dropdown Choose to download your list as a PDF or CSV (Excel file) Notes are downloaded with your variable list Review variable details or remove them from the list with these buttons

  15. eDatashield It is now possible to combine data from more than one LS in a single model as though they were the same dataset Possibility of regional comparisons or UK-wide analysis If interested, discuss with the RSUs concerned when applying

  16. Synthetic LS data (SYLLS) Bespoke project datasets currently available for SLS, hopefully soon for ONS LS and NILS too Bespoke synthetic data behave like real data Allow refinement of syntax and models before visiting the safe-setting to use the LSs

  17. Synthetic LS data (SYLLS) Synthetic “spine” datasets now available for all three LSs Contain Census 2011 Teaching Microdata plus synthetic transitions back to 2001 Include variables such as religion, number of births, marital status and more Useful for teaching and learning about longitudinal analysis with the LSs Download via ‘Guides & Resources’ section of the CALLS Hub website
