  2. Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) • TFA awards cash grants to minor children of current active duty or American Legion members. These grants help families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities, and health expenses thereby keep the child/children in a more stabile environment. • https://www.legion.org/financialassistance/about

TFA Cont.’ • In order to be eligible the minor child must be: • Not older than 17 or (20 if still enrolled in high school or is physically handicapped). • A biological child, stepchild, or in the legal custody of a qualifying veteran. • Qualifying veteran is defined as a member of the US Armed Forces serving on federal orders current under Title 10 of the United State Code or any veteran possessing an up to date membership in The American Legion. • Active duty applicants can be considered without being a member of The American Legion.

  4. TFA Cont.’ • No child is considered eligible for TFA until a complete investigation is conducted, a legitimate family need is determined, and all other available assistance resources have been utilized or exhausted. • TFA applications must originate and be filled out by someone at the local level (post level). • A single onetime non-repayable TFA grant of up to $1500 will be permitted for the minor child or children of a qualifying veteran.

  5. National Emergency Fund (NEF) • The National Emergency Fund, created in response to Hurricane Hugo in 1989, provides emergency funding enabling American Legion Family members to recover from disasters. • The fund provides up to $3,000 for qualified Legion Family members and up to $10,000 for posts. • Only one grant per household per disaster • https://www.legion.org/emergency/about • https://www.legion.org/emergency/apply

NEF Cont.’ • The eligibility requirements are: • Applicant must have been displaced from their primary residence due to damage sustained during a declared natural disaster • Applicant must provide copies of receipts of items required to meet immediate needs (such as temporary housing, food, water, clothing, diapers, etc.) during the period immediately following the disaster. • Does not cover insurance compensation or monetary losses from a business, structures on your property (barns, tool sheds, etc.,) equipment or vehicles • Membership must be active at time of disaster and the time of application.
