The American Coot is The American Coot is a wetland bird. It spends ma- jority of its time in the water and ap- preciates marshes and wetlands for this reason. Usually migrate at night. This mainly aquatic bird is ofuen de- scribed as chicken-like and can be mistaken for a duck. It is ofuen refer- enced in the phrase “crazy as a coot”, alluding to its quirky behavior. The American Coot is better known for swimming than walking, one reason why they are ofuen mistaken for a

duck. In order for the coot to become

airborne, these birds take ofg in water by splattering. In fmight, neck is ex-

ccupied the other side of Lincoln Boulevard on my commutes

home from sports games. But like so many other residents, I had no understanding of the whole world existing inside of this large area. One day at a young age, I decided to go into the area I now know as the Ballona Wetlands reserve and explore. As I walked through the tall weeds and other invasive species, I did not give myself a moment to quiet my own mind and listen to what was around me. It was not until I returned about 9 years later that I was able to really see the wetlands for what it is, a home for so many.
