FORENSIC & INVESTIGATIVE SCIENCES
WHAT IS FORENSIC SCIENCE?
- According to one definition, the word “forensic” means the
application of scientific knowledge to legal problems.
- The term “forensic science” refers to a group of scientific disciplines
which are concerned with the application of their particular scientific area of expertise to law enforcement, criminal, civil, legal, and judicial matters.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE VS. FORENSIC SCIENCE
FIVS is often confused with criminal justice, which is focused more on the rehabilitation of offenders rather than the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of scientific evidence in a court of law. A FIVS degree is not a criminal justice degree.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE VS. FORENSIC SCIENCE
Criminal justice is a broad term that refers to the procedures and government
- rganizations which focus on upholding the law. These government entities work to
maintain control in the public arena, prevent and manage crime, authorize punishment for criminal activities, and offer rehabilitation.
WE’RE #1!
Our FIVS program is ranked #1 out of 25 Best Bachelors in Forensic Science Programs by the Bachelor’s Degree Center, an independent resource website. The rankings were based on several factors including cost, program reputation, alumni salaries, graduation rates and job placement rates.
FEPAC ACCREDITATION
Our FIVS degree is the only bachelor’s degree in the state of Texas that is nationally accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
This accreditation only applies to the Science Emphasis within our program.
STATE OF TEXAS LICENSURE
During the 84th Legislative Session, the Texas Legislature passed SB-1287, which required all forensic analysts to be licensed beginning January 1, 2019. See Tex. S.B. 1287, 84th Leg., R.S. (2015). The term "forensic analyst" means any person who on behalf of a crime laboratory accredited under this article technically reviews or performs a forensic analysis or draws conclusions from
- r interprets a forensic analysis for a court or crime
- laboratory. Requirements for forensic analyst and/or technicians to become
licensed include: 1) Minimum Education Requirements -- The FIVS-SCE degree meets these specific education requirements. 2) Application Fee; 3) Successful completion of a General Forensic Analyst or Technician Licensing Exam; 4) Specific coursework requirements; and 5) Proficiency testing requirements.
EMPHASIS AREAS
PRE-LAW EMPHASIS CAREERS SCIENCE EMPHASIS CAREERS ATTORNEY JUDGE The Law Emphasis was created because there is a shortage of attorneys and judges who have the scientific knowledge or background to understand scientific evidence being presented by expert witnesses (i.e. forensic scientists). NOT ACCREDITED DOES NOT MEET TEXAS LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS-CANNOT PRACTICE IN A LAB TOXICOLOGY DNA AND EVIDENCE TECHNICIAN FIREARMS LABORATORY HAZARD MATERIALS LABORATORY LATENT PRINT PROCESSING FORENSIC NURSING MEDICAL EXAMINER DIGITAL & MULTIMEDIA SCIENCES ODONTOLOGY (FORENSIC DENTISTRY) PATHOLOGY/BIOLOGY PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY PSYCHIATRY & BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE ACCREDITED MEETS TEXAS LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

DUAL CREDIT
- Automatically counts towards total credit hours, even if
DO NOT count towards your degree
- Grades are NOT calculated in your TAMU GPA
CLASSIFICATION STATUS: U1 = 0-29 CREDIT HOURS (2.75) U2 = 30-59 CREDIT HOURS (3.0) U3 = 60-89 CREDIT HOURS (3.0) U4 = 90+ CREDIT HOURS (3.0)
- Total Credit Hours includes all courses taken at A&M, previous institutions,
AP, and Dual Credit combined
AP CREDITS
- STUDENTS WITH AP CREDITS NEED TO KEEP IN MIND THAT
ACCEPTING THOSE CREDITS EARLY COULD AFFECT YOUR CLASSIFICATION STATUS AND CAUSE YOU TO HAVE TO MAINTAIN A HIGHER GPR.
- WE RECOMMEND STUDENTS TO ACCEPT THEIR AP CREDITS
AFTER THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR.
- WE WILL NOT HAVE A STUDENT REPEAT A COURSE THEY
