Strengthening environmental community groups

To increase skills in environmental protection and encourage participation in natural resource management and preservation. The targeted groups are from RW.05 and RW 06 in tugu utara village

Construction of evacuation centre/building

  • This community is very prone to flooding which always occurs every year, and there were casualties and

incidence of disease outbreaks(various water-borne diseases) due to floods in the past, and based on the latest data, thousands of people fled their flooded homes in five villages in early 2016; 187 houses were inundated and 606 residents evacuated to higher ground. In Parungsari alone, the flood inundated 25 houses, forcing 68 residents to flee their flooded houses.

  • to reduce flood risks and minimize casualties, and will provide life-saving protection during flood disaster

and community space during normal periods. It will also operate as one of post disaster emergency shelters for people due to damaged infrastructure and housing. With the construction of this evacuation center, people can have a safe stay in times of flood disaster.

Community evacuation center

  • It has been constructed and completed, and will serve a refuge during flooding

as well as make community safe from flood waters.

  • it also can play a significant role in mitigating the fear of floods and inundation.
  • The people from Tulungrejo community and surrounding villages can access

and reach this place easily as it is located near their areas.

  • . Based on assessment result, more than 750 houses were inundated when

previous flood hit the area Providing/installing signboards for evacuation routes

  • very important in Tulungrejo village; people can reach the built

evacuation place or other safer places/safe shelters easily before the flood hits the area.

  • From the previous floods, the main problem is the spread of people into

several locations/shelters so it will make it difficult for aid distribution and assistance.

  • the installation of signboards on evacuation lines could be an answer in

this village so they can easily identify and know safer locations in the village.

Sibat Command Post (POSKO)

  • it can be used as coordination centre in the event of floods and can be

as a place for aid distribution for that community, and will keep emergency supplies and first aid kits that can be used during flooding

Construction of Deep well & Water tower

  • PMI Bandung is now constructing water supply infrastructure

and constructing latrine facility in Cijagra sub village RT.03/RW09 within Bojongsoang village using deep well

  • system. This is intended to cope with lack of clean water for

people in times of flood disaster, especially for 860 HHs who reside in the area of Citarum riverbanks and flood-prone areas/Cikapundung.

  • It will help and support people daily activities

such as bathing, washing, drinking, cooking etc.

Greenbelt Development

1.000 m2 are being used for green development in Semanggi village. Mayor of Surakarta (Solo) participated in planting Akar wangi tree (Java Vetiver Rootoil

  • This Greenbelt will apply

the concept

  • f

agroforestry and will aim at reducing the threat of flood that occur in the territory of the Semanggi village.

  • PMI solo will utilise and

preserve this empty land along Bengawan Solo watershed to minimise the impacts of flood and can prevent erosion along the riverbank.

  • This

Greenbelt development is a long- term project that have a major impact

  • n

the community. The project not

  • nly

focuses

  • n

Floodgate repair

  • Based on the assessment, people said that they feel unsafe because of broken floodgate

and it is not working properly when the water is high. Their homes were inundated from previous floods, and flood waters posed infectious diseases.

  • Responding to this situation, flood gate had been repaired in Semanggi village and

communities voluntary worked to fix the broken gate.

Increasing the level of flood preparedness by developing Community Contingency Plans is very important. Flood events in the past highlighted deficiencies in existing community level plans. As of now, 8 CCPs have been developed. If adequately tested and reviewed, community contingency plans are going to lead to greater flood resilience and a reduced impact on the community. Testing the plans will also help community/SIBAT and volunteers to become more familiar with their emergency arrangements.

Advocacy/high level policy dialogues:

  • Organised a national level DRR events in partnership with the BNPB,

the national level government disaster management agency.

  • Held several high level meetings with BNPB/BPBD, federal ministries,

provincial governors and district administration.

  • Advocating to incorporate DRR/flood risk reduction measures in the

national disaster management law.

  • BNPB endorses and appreciates the project and initiative of the

Partnership.

  • Many districts replicating the project to other communities. Zurich

project is considered a model by the local government.

  • Total buy in by the local communities.
