  2. Tonight’s Purpose  You will learn enough about Tolt to picture your student coming here in the fall.  You will gain information to make the transition smoother for you and your student.

Overview of This Evening Amie Karkainen, Principal Middle School and Tolt Info Activities/Athletics Tom Oldenburg, Assistant Principal WEB Tim Suchsland, Counselor Student Devices Chris Collins, Director of IT Erik McFarland, Technology Teacher Andrea McKiernan, Parent and PTSA 6th Grade Teacher Stations/Tours 6th Grade Teacher

  4. Tolt Students  Come from all 5 Riverview elementary schools (Carnation, Cherry Valley, Stillwater, ERMA and PARADE) .  6 th grade is the first time this graduating class will all be together.  About 750 students in grades 6-8.

  5. While in Middle School  Students go from being more “child - like” to “adult - like” – it’s a time of intense growth.  Students discover their sense of self and become more independent.

  6. Characteristics of Middle Schoolers  Middle schoolers are focused on themselves.  Middle schoolers prioritize their peers over adults.  Middle schoolers change their interests frequently.

  7. Characteristics of Middle Schoolers  Middle schoolers are idealistic and see the world of just and unjust.  Middle schoolers tend to exaggerate. (If it doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t…get the whole story.)  Middle schoolers are curious.

  8. We Help Middle Schoolers…  We help middle schoolers take risks, try new things, explore, uncover strengths and learn life skills in a safe and supportive environment.

  9. How Parents Can Help  Stay involved! Check grades in Skyward.  Help students with organization, time management, and self advocacy.

  10. How Parents Can Help  Shift more responsibility to students as they progress through middle school.  Help your student learn from failure.

  11. How Parents Can Help  Encourage your student to help others.

  12. Our Daily Schedule  Six 57-minute classes during the day  4-minute passing time (no lockers)  Three 30-minute, mixed grade lunches

  13. Standard 6 th Grade Classes  Math 6, Advanced Math 6, or Pre-Algebra  Language Arts 6 or Pre-Honors Language Arts 6  Social Studies 6  Science 6  PE-PE-Tech-Art Rotation  Elective

  14. Electives  Concert Choir  Debut Band  Premier Band  Strand: 4 quarter-long electives  Reading Lab, Math Lab, or Learning Lab Students will have the opportunity to select semester-long electives in 7 th and 8 th grade.

Thanks PTSA + REF!  8 th grade leaders mentor 6 th graders  1st day of school (morning) is WEB orientation  Only 6th graders + 8th grade leaders  Assembly, teambuilding activities, tour of campus Additional activities throughout the year  Coordinators:   Ronda Ish, Quinn Thompson, Tim Suchsland

Important Dates  Counselors visited every 5th grade classroom last week  Tuesday, June 5th – 5th Grade Transition Event from 2:45-5:30 pm  Monday, August 27th – Orientation Day from 8-11 am and 12-3 pm – pay fines, turn in medications, class schedules available, pick up PE uniforms, etc.  Tuesday, September 4th – First Day of School – WEB Orientation in morning

  22. Our Staff  Loves working with middle school students.  Puts a lot of time into helping 6 th graders transition into middle school – we have an incredible group of 6 th grade teachers.  Chooses to work at Tolt and in Riverview.
