Sheet Press: Before V4 Precious Plastic Mark Jason
Designed a sheet press as part of his Masters. Designed a skateboard deck press as part of his bachelors and a small sheet press. Prototyped several sheet presses and documented lots of variations on forums.
V4 Goals
- Sheet size: 1220x1220mm
- Thickness: 5-18mm
- Quantity: 4 sheets per
day at 12MM
- Types of plastic: HDPE,
PP, optionally PS
- The machine is safe and
friendly to use
- Min cycles before small
repair: 50
- Min cycles before big
repair: 200
- Price for materials:
€4000 Goals we identifjed at the start of V4
Our Approach
Conceptual change between previous versions and this version was to begin to look at producing sheets as a system instead of a stand alone press. We began by using Marks press as a foundation and pooled the observations from the other presses in to identifying how the new system should work. Areas Of Improvement
- Simpler to build mould.
- Multiple moulds in the system to allow for
simultaneous heating and cooling.
- Never have to carry the full weight of the mould to
make it more user friendly.
- A custom oven to accommodate for larger moulds.
- Develop a fume extraction system.

Sheet size: 1220x1220mm Achieved: Producing 1310x1310 Thickness: 5-18mm Part-Achieved: So far we have made 6-12mm Quantity: 4 sheets per day at 12MM Achieved: 2 Hours per sheet with 1 hour pre heat at start
- f day
Types of plastic: HDPE, PP,
- ptionally PS
Achieved: Made multiple of each type The machine is safe and friendly to use Achieved: Added fume extraction and never have to lift more than 30Kg during
- peration
Min cycles before small repair: 50 Still in progress Min cycles before big repair 200 Still in progress Price for materials: €4000 Achieved: Estimated 3-4000 in NL
Next Steps
- Duration test system
- Refjne CAD model for oven
and press
- Dive in to insulation
types
- Changes to oven
- Insulation Types
- Fan position
- Size
- Integrate extraction
- Fully synchronize
fasteners, sheets and extrusions used across whole system
- Make a 30 day build plan
- Make fjnal BOM and order
