Underage Drinking Prevention

Agenda Day 1 8:00 – 8:30 Registration 8:30 – 9:00 General Session: Welcome and Introductions - [Host] 9:00 – 10:30 Environmental Strategies - [RPC Trainer] Environmental prevention is a proven approach for reducing alcohol-related problems and must, therefore, be included in any comprehensive plan to reducing underage drinking. This session will examine environmental prevention’s “big picture” focus and the five main elements of an effective environmental prevention approach: applied data and research, intentional organizing, policies, enforcement, and media advocacy. 10:30 –12:00 Alcohol Laws - [ABLE RC] This session will discuss Oklahoma’s alcoholic beverage laws, especially those intended to reduce underage drinking through limiting youth access to alcohol. 12:00 – 1:30 Lunch on your own 1:30 – 2:30 Alcohol Laws continued – [ABLE RC] This session will discuss Oklahoma’s alcoholic beverage laws, especially those intended to reduce underage drinking through limiting youth access to alcohol. 2:30 – 4:00 Alcohol Compliance Checks – [ABLE RC] The session will address the developmental and environmental factors that contribute to drinking patterns within the normative group of adolescents. The trainer will also explain how these factors differ from the developmental and environmental factors to which youth who abuse alcohol or become dependent are exposed. Media events regarding compliance checks will be shown. 4:00 – 4:30 Break/Train Youth/Compliance Check Group Set Up – [ABLE RC] 4:30 – 8:00 Combined Exercises: Compliance Checks / Environmental Scans – [ABLE RC] Enforcement of alcoholic beverage laws is an essential part of environmental prevention. In this exercise participants will accompany plainclothes ABLE agents and underage volunteers as they attempt to purchase alcohol from various types of retailers. Participants will also note alcohol-related signage and other environmental factors at the establishments. 8:00 Dinner on your own
