Election Process

  • On May 15, 2020 the membership ratified a temporary amendment to the AFT

Local 1828 Constitution to allow for electronic balloting for the 2020 Biennial

  • fficer election due to the unprecedented COVID 19 pandemic.
  • This amendment changed the way in which the election was conducted, but it did

not compromise the secrecy of the ballots, or our ability to ensure that only “members in good standing” voted, and no elector could vote more than once.

  • Simply Voting was chosen as the vendor to provide the electronic balloting services

for this election.

  • No one from AFT Local 1828 has the ability to view actual votes cast. The system

simply does not permit that level of access.

Election Process

  • Balloting ran from 10:00 a.m. May 19th 2020 until 11:59 p.m. May 26, 2020.
  • After the election period closed, the members of the election committee were

provided the electronic logs that are automatically compiled by Simply Voting. These logs are a detailed itemization of all activity during the election, except for actual votes.

  • The election committee used the logs and the master voter eligibility list to verify

that all votes cast were from authorized voters, and that no voters cast more than a single ballot.

  • Once the election committee completed the review of the audit logs the vote tallies

were downloaded from Simply Voting

Vote Tallies

  • Simply Voting is the only entity that has any information about the actual vote cast by

individual electors. As such, they provide sworn certification to us that the result reported in the tallies are accurate.

  • Our elections are broken down by campus and part-time and full-time status. As a result we

actually run 6 separate elections. In order to determine the winners of the district-wide

  • ffices (President, Secretary, Treasurer, C.O.P.E. Chair and Chief Negotiator) we must

manually aggregate the data provided for each campus part time and full time election. Using the certified results from Simply Voting I tabulated the total votes reported for all

  • ffices.
  • The totals and the Simply Voting certified results were then provided to the election

committee for verification and cross-checking. The election committee has certified the following results as accurate totals.
