  11. ABOUT ECOPARQUE PEÑALOLÉN UAI 3 EcoParque Peñalolén UAI is an educational, experimental and applied research facility, where the operating principles of circular metabolism are applied in order to minimize the flow of external resources and maximize the valorization of residues and water by means of various appropriate technologies. Local model of public-private-academic collaboration with an international outreach

  12. ABOUT ECOPARQUE PEÑALOLÉN UAI 3 The first sustainable Chilean EcoPark is a project of the Municipality of Peñalolén in partnership with Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, with contributions from private companies Copec, Aguas Andinas and Metrogas.

  13. ABOUT ECOPARQUE PEÑALOLÉN UAI 3 > WHAT WE DO 1. Education We develop a educational initiatives where citizens can learn and practice basic concepts related to urban sustainability, such as residues and wastewater reuse and urban agriculture. 2. Research We carry out applied research oriented towards optimizing and linking technological processes for organic residues and wastewater treatment and reuse, aiming for contextualized, cost effective and socially and environmentally sound way. 3. Community outreach We offer a facility where different public, private and non-governmental organizations can join to carry out educational and social activities related to achieve a circular economy in urban contexts.

  14. ABOUT ECOPARQUE PEÑALOLÉN UAI 3 > LOCATION • The EcoParque is located in Peñalolén Park (2 of 24 Ha in total) • Peñalolén means “Reunión de hermanos” or “ Gathering of brothers ” • Representative of the country socio-economic diversity. • 12 th most populated district in the country It is located at Av. José Arrieta 7659 , Peñalolén, Santiago de Chile

  16. GUIDING CONCEPT 4 Urban Circular Metabolism CITIES TODAY SUSTAINABLE CITIES Took water, food, air, and other Minimum external supplies demand; nutrients, resources from nature and return them water and organic matter recirculation; energy, food as pollutants an clean water self-supply; closing nature cycles

  17. GUIDING CONCEPT 4 Urban Circular Metabolism

  18. GUIDING CONCEPT 4 Urban Circular Metabolism • We collect residues from the district i.e. oil and market residues and transform them into compost, vermicompost, biogas, biodiesel. • The products attained are applied in the urban garden, greenhouse and nursery

  19. INITIAL PHASE 5 1,5 YEARS OF OPERATION Above 140 tons of OSW 4 active 2.500 visits, more than 50 workshops valorized per year research lines ✓ WORKING LAB ✓ ALLIANCES WITH COMPANIES ✓ OPERATIONAL AND FINANTIAL SUSTAINABILITY The inauguration of the initial phase of the project was completed in December 2015. In its first phase, the project consists of an area of 2,300 m 2

  33. APPLIED RESEARCH 6 1 Optimization of the co composting and vermicomposting of organic residues and digestate Objectives: 1. To improve the efficiency of composting and vermicomposting of market residues using digestate irrigation 2. To monitor the degradation process using physical chemical indicators and following up microbial communities 3. To verify the end quality of the compost and vermicompost produced in all treatments.

  34. APPLIED RESEARCH 6 Efficiency and end-product quality assessment during the 2 anaerobic digestion of market waste using one and two stage reactors Objectives: 1. To define optimal starting up process for a two stage pilot reactor treating organic waste coming from urban markets . 2. To study the hydrolitic and methanogenic degradation of organic residues using one and two stage reactors at different temperatures, OLR and HRTs.

  35. APPLIED RESEARCH 6 3 Impact of organic biofertilizers in urban agriculture Objectives: 1. To compare different organic fertilizers including urine, compost, vermicompost, and digestate in the germination and growth of selected species under-controlled and uncontrolled conditions. 2. To determine to what extent soil quality is affected by different biofertilizers treatments. 3. To determine the extent to which organic residues can satisfy urban agriculture demand

  36. APPLIED RESEARCH 6 4 Optimization of biodiesel production process from waste oils Objectives: 1. To study process efficiency and end product quality for biodiesel produced from urban waste oils using different catalysts. 2. To analyze the efficiency of methanol recovery and glycerin quality via distillation at different temperatures.
