Why We Do It: Community Need

  • Three areas of Greater Geelong (Corio, Norlane and Whittington) have

been identified as being in the 1st decile (i.e. the most disadvantaged communities) based on SEIFA data. (ABS, April 2013)

  • Four areas of Geelong have been identified as “Red alert localities” in the

Employment Vulnerability Index (EVI) Corio, Norlane, Newcomb and

  • Moolap. These are communities are considered amongst Australia’s most

disadvantaged places to live. (EVI, Nov 2013)

  • The Geelong region experiences higher rates of chronic disease and risk

factors (obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, alcohol & tobacco consumption rates); lower life expectancies, higher levels of crime against individuals and higher proportions of people with mental health behavior and mood problems than the state average (2011, G21)

  • Almost 20% of individuals or families consider themselves food insecure in

the Geelong region (COGG 2012)
