About the survey • Conducted annually since 1997 • 2015 sample size : – 5,353 urban-households approached in person to participate:  2,199 unattended, 1,141 refused, 1,513 surveys distributed  924 completed surveys (61.1%) – 500 surveys mailed-out to households in the Rural North  91 completed surveys (18.2%) – Total of 1,000 households covering 2,878 individual residents • Lower response rate for Epping North households (49.4%) • Main new topics in 2015: – ATSI status – Public transport – Housing affordability – Open space – Gambling

  5. The household structure within the LGA is comprised mainly of 2 parent families • 47% were family households in CoW , higher in Epping North • Take away message: Importance of access to a range of quality services for families

  6. The cultural diversity within precincts differs widely and is most prominent in established suburbs 2.3% identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in Epping North, higher than LGA average (1.2%)

Housing situation Median weekly rent/mortgage payment : $411 in Epping North vs $374 in CoW High % of mortgagee h’holds : 55.7% Highest % of rental h’holds in LGA : 29.1% Intentions to move house in the next year highest in Epping North: 17.2% vs 11.2% in CoW Largest % of heavy housing-related financial stress recorded in Thomastown (28%) & Bundoora (24%) 16.4% of Epping North households report heavy housing financial stress 7

Employment characteristics – Epping North Highest % of residents with a Bachelor /Higher Degree in LGA (46.6% in Epping North vs 25.8% in CoW) 3 rd Highest median weekly personal income - $662 compared with $581 for CoW, $427 for Lalor 26.9% employed as ‘professionals’ , average for CoW is 22.1% Low proportion of unemployed respondents (3.0% compared with 4.8% for CoW) 23.1% of Epping North employees work locally in CoW, 35.5% work in Inner Melbourne 23.0% of employed residents reported their 2-way commute to work takes >90 minutes

Lifestyle factors – Epping North Lowest rate of people with a permanent / long term disability (12.0%), LGA average (17.9%) Highest % of respondents acting in a carer role 20.1%, CoW average (11%) 38.8% of Epping North residents participated in less than 1 hour of moderate to vigorous activity in the last week (CoW = 35.5%) 66.0% satisfied with current employment but 10.9% felt commute time too long – highest in CoW (5.8%)
