SLIDE 17

Spring 2011 RESAP Meeting (Apr. 19-20, 2011)

Safety Support Process

Purpose: To provide support for cooperatives that desire to participate in RESAP but lack available safety resources

► NRECA facilitates a resource pool of qualified onsite observers ► Approach

  • Participation is voluntary
  • Service fee and terms are standardized
  • Price is established at $850 dollars per onsite day (travel time is included in

this rate) Example - 2 onsite days, day and half travel = $1,700 Pricing based on average JT&S average salary, assumes 50% benefit cost, includes markup for travel time, corporate overheads are not included

► Meals, lodging and travel expenses are paid based on receipted expenses ► A standardized task agreement would be signed by all parties outlining terms and

conditions (NRECA not included, coordination only)

► All fees are billed directly to the system needing the support by the provider

17

SLIDE 18

Spring 2011 RESAP Meeting (Apr. 19-20, 2011)

  • Proximity (travel time)
  • Schedule and availability
  • Special interests or needs of the system being evaluated
  • Cooperative seeking help receives a short list of available qualified
  • bserves with brief summary of experience and qualifications
  • Cooperative seeking helps makes final selection

Rewards and Recognition

► Incentive – specifies an award in advance of reaching an

  • bjective or goal
  • Tends to drive reporting underground
  • Can adversely affect culture
  • Sets an expectation – can become a “God given right” or

provide negative effect

► Rewards / Recognition – offered or provided “after the fact”

for special (over and above) achievement or accomplishment

36

slide-37
SLIDE 37

Spring 2011 RESAP Meeting (Apr. 19-20, 2011)

Tips for Effective Rewards and Recognition

► All employees must be eligible ► The recognition should clearly communicate the behaviors or

actions being rewarded

► Everyone who performs at specified level should receive the

reward

► The recognition should occur as close as possible to the

performance achieved – to reinforce the desired behavior

► Do not design processes in which managers select the people

to recognize. (i.e. Employee of the Month)

► Try to create recognition activities that build positive morale

37

slide-38
SLIDE 38

Spring 2011 RESAP Meeting (Apr. 19-20, 2011)

Trap to Avoid for Rewards and Recognition

► Avoid processes that single out a few employees, with unclear

recognition criteria

► Provide a grand prize to a few when many contributed to the

accomplishment (Raffle message “one winner – the rest are losers”)

► Avoid recognition selection processes that are perceived as

political

► Avoid repetitive rewards/recognition events, they tend to

become viewed as a “given” or an entitlement over time and not longer reward – people like random, unexpected recognition with and element of surprise

40

slide-41
SLIDE 41

Spring 2011 RESAP Meeting (Apr. 19-20, 2011)

Safety Accountability Video

approach must be employed?

  • Safety must be managed in the same manner as production and

quality.

► What is the purpose of the speaker’s questioning within organizations?

  • To assess the clarity of defined expectations at each organizational

level!

► When a line employee is asked - who is charge of safety here and responds

“I am in charge of safety”, what specific attribute of organizational culture is demonstrated?

  • Ownership!

► What would most of our line supervisors say if asked - what specific daily

activities are expected of them in order to prevent accidents?

  • ?
