Governing bodies and local authorities should make every effort to conduct informed parent and staff governor elections in which the expectations and credentials of prospective candidates are made clear. The constitution of governing bodies of maintained schools 2017 Elected Governors • Parent and Staff Governors – They are representatives, not delegates! – Elected by the appropriate body. All stakeholders in this group must have the opportunity to be nominated / vote. – In the first instance nominations for vacancies need to be sought even if the existing governor wishes to stand again – If more nominations than vacancies an election needs to be held Elections • ESCC delegate the running of the election to the Headteacher in the school. • Best practice and templates can be found in guidance for staff and parent elections. • Elections can be held electronically or paper based. If electronically then all those who do not have access to vote electronically should be given the opportunity to vote by paper. 10
