settlement in the mouth of the Sysola river dates back to year 1586. In January 1780 it was given a name Ust-Sysolsk which became the centre of the territory. In the year of its 150-th anniversary it was renamed into Syktyvkar. The climate is severe. The winter is snowy and frosty and the summer is never too hot. Raisa Smetanina Republican Skiing complex

One of the best ski stadiums in Russia for preparation of cross-country skiers was founded in 1977 and is currently a venue for annual Russian nationals, 10 all- Russian competitions and other 2-3 events included in the FIS calendar. In 1985 и 1997 the stadium hosted World Cup series in cross-country skiing and ski

• rienteering. The technical staff of the complex prepares

and maintains some 47 km of different ski courses. In 1992 the Republican Ski Complex was named after Raisa Smetanina, a four- time Olympic champion.

The ski complex serves as a training base for leading coaches and renowned Olympic champions Vasily Rochev and Raisa Smetanina, members of the Russian national team: Vasily Rochev (junior), Yulia Ivanova and Stanislav Volzhentsev. Every year Olympic champions Nikolay Bazhukov, Vasily Rochev and Niina Rocheva give a start to ski races. More than 600 children from Russian and former Soviet republics take part in completions to win Raisa Smetanina prizes. The stadium also offers trails for amateur fans of cross-country skiing.

Skies can be prepared for the race using a modern technology of micro grinding on a Mantec Svecom machine improving the ski surface.

The ski complex provides a wide range of extra services: a health rehabilitation center, a sauna, a steam house. The visitors can rent skies and other winter sports equipment.

How to get to Syktyvkar by train?

Syktyvkar is a cultural and scientific center of the republic. The National Museum of Komi can boast a unique collection of exhibits telling about the republic’s history. The National Gallery displays a fine collection of old and modern art. The Museum of Geology presents samples of local flora and fauna, minerals and fossil fuels.

The museum of four-time Olympic champion Raisa Smetanina was founded in 1997. It is located in a detached house that was a gift to the celebrated skier from the republic. The exhibition of the museum unrolls the history of cross- country skiing in the second half of the XX century through personal items, photos and other exhibits connected with the life of the legendary athlete.
