spelling.

  • The goal of phonics is to teach students the most common

sound-spelling relationships so that they can decode, or sound out, words.

  • It was created by the Department of Education to test

children’s phonic knowledge with a mixture of real and alien words.

  • To identify if any further support is needed.
  • Takes place in June.
  • There are 40 words for the child to read.
  • It usually takes around 5-10 minutes and will be done

with the class teacher.

  • Sing the alphabet song.
  • Play ‘I spy’ using sounds as well as letter names, e.g. ‘I spy something beginning with

sh’.

  • Create a sound box. Ask your child to find things around the house containing a

certain sound.

  • Matching Rhymes- Give your child a word and ask them to write down rhyming words

containing the same sounds.

  • Salt dough- Get your child to make words or sounds out of salt dough.
  • Play Buried Treasure.
  • Continue reading at home with your child.
