Welcome to Year 3

Communication
- Class Dojo-is the means by which we shall communicate any
messages or reminders. This is also the best way to contact us. Please ensure that you are signed up to Class Dojo.
- Reporting absence- please contact the office by phone and
leave a message or visit reception. Please don’t report absence through DOJO.
- School newsletters are sent via email and can be accessed on
the school website. Letters will be sent home for trips/ clubs etc
- Please update your contact details with the school office if
they change during the course of the year.
Snacks/ Lunchtime
- Snacks – children can bring healthy snacks of
fruit or vegetables to eat at break time.
- Water bottles- children are encouraged to drink
water and can bring their own drink bottles into the classroom.
- Lunch –hot dinners are available and the new
menus have been sent home this week. You should also have received your information about Parent Pay.
Expectations
- We expect children to actively listen in class and
to engage in their learning in order to achieve the very best that they can. In general, we expect all children to use the Gems that they have been introduced to.
- We celebrate their achievements, behaviour and
gem power in weekly assemblies and reward them accordingly.
- We vary our teaching and activities to include:
whole class, small group, paired and individual tasks and encourage the children to work with a range of their peers.

Curriculum
The 3 main topics covered over the year are :
- Ancient Egyptians-History focus
- A study of the local area- based on local
history and geography.
- The Rain Forest – Science and Geography
focus.
Ancient Egyptians
Autumn Term
Year 3
Key Question: What was it like to live in Ancient Egypt?
English
We will be studying the book ‘The Happy Prince’ and our focus is on using effective sentences in a fairy tale. We will then investigate non- fiction and explanation texts based on ‘The Robot Dog’.
ICT
In ICT we will be creating PowerPoints and inserting images and sound files We will then research Ancient Egypt with minimal adult input and share our learning with
- thers. We will then go on to
answer questions about the topic.
Mathematics
We will be focussing on the understanding of number including Place Value of hundreds, tens and
- nes in numbers to 1,000.
We will then move on to addition and subtraction including mental methods as well as formal written methods. We will revise the multiplication tables x2 x5 x10
History
In History, we will do an in depth study of the Ancient Egyptians. We will learn about who built the pyramids and the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. We will then look at the achievements of the earliest civilizations gaining an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared.

(Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) New Beginnings Mindfulness- Focused for learning Relationships – friendships
R.E We will be thinking about what Christians learn from the creation story. We will them move on to think about what is it like for someone to follow God.
Art
We will begin with colour mixing using paint. We will look at the works of artists for inspiration and look at how the Egyptians' painted their tombs. We will paint an Egyptian wall painting based on the story of ‘The Blue Hippo’.
MFL - French
(Modern Foreign Languages)
We will be learning numbers to 10, common greetings and classroom instructions . We will begin to ask for and give our name. We will spend some time at Christmas looking at how the French celebrate Christmas. During European Week-we will learn about Holland.
Science
We will be identifying that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount
- f nutrition, and that they
cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat. Also, identifying that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement. We will then investigate different types of rocks.
Music
We will be learning songs for Young Voices. We also learn some songs based on
- ur topic of Ancient Egypt.
P.E
This term in PE we will be doing
- football. We will then learn a Dance
based on the Egyptians!
Geography
We will be locating continents , the Equator, the tropics, the hemispheres and Egypt. We will be studying the River Nile, creating a map of Egypt and locating important landmarks like the pyramids. Multi-Cultural week-learning about Holland.
DT In DT we will study Levers and Linkages and investigate different objects that use a lever and pivot. We will investigate how a shaduf works and design and create a miniature working shaduf.
English
An explanation text – How a robot dog works. A recount- A walk in the woods Non-chronological report
Maths
Maths Mastery Maths is taught daily within the class. The children work with a ‘Talking Partner’ for the first part of the lesson while the teacher models and demonstrates the learning objective. Independently ,the children work on ‘Do It’ , ‘Twist it’ and ‘Prove it’ , questions.

- P.E over the year will consist of Football, Tennis,
Dance, Gym, Athletics, outdoor/Forest School activities.
PSHE
- Mindfulness techniques/ dealing with emotions
- Relaxation and calming techniques- recognise
importance of Mental Health.
- The 5 Ways to Well Being are linked to Positive Playtimes.
Homework
Reading
- We encourage all children to read daily at home as
well as complete guided reading group activities daily in school.
- We ask that children record their reading on the
Reading Record card. Please could parents sign this to confirm their reading. They can read alone or with an adult.
- Children are guided to choose books from school
that are appropriate for their reading skills.
- Children should change their reading books at least
- nce a week but can do so as often as possible.
Reading
Children are rewarded for reading. Each ‘read’ could be 10 minutes reading , a number
- f pages or a chapter of a book.
Certificates are rewarded for the number of reads achieved. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Then 75, 100, 125, 150 etc. Any reading that your child does (reading book, library book, books from home) can be recorded on the reading record and count for the reading challenge.
Homework
Times Tables
- The National Curriculum states that children should
know times tables facts by the end of Y4.
- Through the use of Times Tables Rockstars we
encourage children to practise and learn multiplication and division facts on a regular basis. They are rewarded with certificates.
- Children are also able to achieve their times tables
badge and then division badge.
- Please ask if you think that your child does not have
a TTR login.
Homework
Spelling
- Children are given spelling lists on Mondays that we
ask them to practise at home as well as daily in
- school. This they can do in their homework books.
- A list of ways to practise spellings is included in the
homework book.
- Spellings will be tested in class the following Monday.
Topic grid of activities
- In addition, we provide a grid of activities that are
linked to our class topic.
- These are entirely optional but are usually a fun way
for parents to talk to their children about what they are learning at school.
Trip
A trip is planned for the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford on Friday 22nd November. The children will take part in a workshop ‘ Egypt Detectives’. Further information will follow shortly.
Trips/Clubs/Events
- A clubs letter will follow in the coming week.
- Drop in Thursday morning between 8.40 and
8.55- parents are welcome to pop in early and look at the work the children have been doing that week.
- This term the whole school will be preparing to
take part in ‘Young Voices’ in January.
