  3. Curriculum Intent Following surveys with the parent community, the children and staff, the school have identified key elements that make the curriculum at Bentley Heath special. This forms the basis for our Curriculum Intent, which is a recognition of the knowledge and skills which will equip the children for life in the 21st Century based upon Christian values as a Church of England School. As such, the Bentley Heath Curriculum Intent is included in your handouts for you to read at your leisure. Everything we teach comes back to this Intent and with your continued support we believe the children can thrive.

  4. Curriculum Intent Knowledge Skills  English and Maths  Communication  Healthy Living  Problem Solving  The World – diversity  Resilience  Real Life  Empathy Christian Values Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

  5. Reading  Children are given the opportunity to change their home reader every day. Home/school diaries need to be signed each time you listen to your child read; you don’t have to finish a book to record their reading. Please aim for 4 times a week.  Reading books and home/school diaries need to be in school every day.

  6. Reading  Guided Reading takes place Monday to Thursday in class.  The children, in these sessions have the opportunity to read in small groups. They are then taught the skills needed to answer written comprehension questions.  On other days they will complete reading-related tasks, read a variety of different types of text, and have the opportunity to enjoy reading for pleasure.

  7. Writing  Emphasis is on handwriting this year – the children need to be joining their letters and focusing on presentation.  The children will practise producing longer and more sustained pieces of writing – homework will occasionally include some longer pieces of writing.  GAPS – Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling - CPG white homework books / SPaG.com to consolidate learning.

Mathematics  Rapid Maths each morning – 5-10 mins testing skills.  In maths lessons the children will be encouraged to use and apply their prior learning to solve problems, using discussion and reasoning about number and calculation methods.  Practical uses of maths at home – giving and finding change, weighing and measuring capacity.  TELLING THE TIME! To the nearest minute and also using 24 hour clock.  Times tables focus – All times tables – aim to test 3 times a week. Your children will sit the Times Table National Test in 2021!

  12. Division Sharing and grouping  I have 24 cakes to share between 6 people how many can they have each?  How many plates of 6 cakes can I make if there are 24 people? Context – rounding up or down  15 people are travelling to the theatre. How many cars will I need if each car can take 4 people ?  15 people are travelling to the theatre? How many full cars will there be if each car can take 4 people?

  13. Helping your child with maths  The DCFS leaflets /B. H. maths curriculum booklet (can be found on school website and entrance).  Talking maths whilst out with your child; quick fire sums, telling the time, timetables, identifying shapes  Practical home activities including measuring, reading scales, time differences (calendar and hours, digital and analogue)

  14. Homework  Maths and English homework will be set on a Wednesday/Thursday and handed in on the following Monday/Wednesday. English homework will alternate between grammar and a writing task. Check home school diaries or inside their homework books.  Spellings are set on a Friday and tested the following Friday.  Approximately 30 minutes for each subject – it does not all have to be in one go!  Please complete written homework in pencil.

  18. Equipment  Pencil case with stationery.  Coloured pencils – no felt tips please. We also write in pencil – no pens or biros.  Art shirt – old shirt/tshirt/apron  Home/school Diary  Reading book.  PE and Games kit need to be in on a Monday and Friday as we may be indoor or outdoor.  Instruments will be required on a Tuesday.

  19. Contacting Us Write a short note in your child’s home/school diary – remind them that they need to share it with us please! Write a short letter or note which your child can bring in to school. Talk to us – end of the day is easier! Make an appointment via the office to see us. Please inform us if your child is going home with a different adult.
