  5. What are SATs? • These are tests that the government set for all children who are in year 6 • A new national curriculum was introduced in 2014. As a result, the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) changed the tests so that they assess the new curriculum. Pupils took the new tests for the first time in May 2016. • There are no longer levels instead pupils receive a scaled score. This will advise whether pupils have met the national standard or not.

  6. Scaled Scores • A pupil’s scaled score is based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil’s raw score is translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. A pupil who achieves the national standard will have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. This will mean that they are well placed to succeed in the next phase of their education. • In the past, there have been level 6 tests for pupils who can demonstrate attainment above level 5. Instead the tests have been developed so that there is scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths.

  7. Scaled Scores – 2016 papers

  8. Pass, Fail and Greater Depth • A scaled score of 100 is a pass. • If a child receives a scaled score of 110 or above then they are working well above the national average and are considered to be working at greater depth.

  10. The Reading Test • Focus on skills involved in reading, understanding and responding to texts across a range of genres. • A range of texts – usually 3 - which get increasingly more challenging (no theme). • They have 1 hour in which to read the texts and answer the questions.
