Philosophy Our goal is to develop great skaters who can become great hockey players and/or to develop each player’s skating skills and hockey skills to their maximum potential. Core Belief We concentrate on baseline skating technique, believing, we will develop great skaters who can then become great hockey players due to their superior skating capabilities. We are advocates of and incorporate the USA Hockey ADM "American Development Model" into our youth hockey development model. We stress the importance and value of team play. Sportsmanship We mandate “good sportsmanship” from the players, coaches, and parents as well as others representing Yale Youth Hockey.
Skills Sessions

Core Belief We recognize children today live very busy lives. We encourage and foster commitment to schoolwork and school activities. Good students become smart hockey players and good citizens. Core Belief We encourage participation in other sports believing this develops important crossover skills, provides our children with intellectual, social and athletic balance, and a sustainable love of hockey for many, many years. Core Belief Yale Youth Hockey allows our children, parents and families to integrate into the Yale community and experience Yale’s history and culture.
Season Our 2014-2015 Season is expected to begin in very early September and extend to the end of February. In recent years, CHC Tournaments and Outside Tournaments have extended into mid or late March. Ice Slot availability in February becomes more challenging and March is very unpredictable. Our 2014-2015 Season - September through February is ~26 Weeks. Practices (Travel Teams) We anticipate providing 2 Practice Ice Slots per week averaged over the Season. It is not logistically possible to guarantee 2 Practice Ice Slots per week each week, although 2 is our objective. Ice slot availability at every program and every rink is a moving target, unforeseen ice slot cancelations are common and weather related issues are uncontrollable. Games (Travel Teams) We anticipate providing 16 to 18 Home Game Ice Slots primarily at Ingalls Rink - Yale University. Some Home Game Ice Slots will be scheduled at outside rinks. Scheduling Games Away is the responsibility of the Team Manager and/or Head Coach. We expect at least as many Away Games to be scheduled as Home Game Ice Slots allocated. Tournaments (Travel Teams) Yale Youth Hockey Association funds the CHC and CGHL State Championship Tournaments, as well as one other tournament provided a team has not played in a mandated Yale Youth Hockey Association Tournament.
Practices (House Limited-Travel Teams) We anticipate providing 1-2 Practice Ice Slots per week averaged over the Season. It is not logistically possible to guarantee 1-2 Practice Ice Slots per week each week, although 1-2 is
unforeseen ice slot cancelations are common and weather related issues are uncontrollable. Games (House Limited-Travel Teams) We anticipate providing 3 to 4 Home Game Ice Slots at Ingalls Rink-Yale University. Scheduling Games Away is the responsibility of the Team Manager and/or Head Coach. We expect at least as many Away Games to be scheduled as Home Game Ice Slots allocated. Tournaments (House Limited-Travel Teams) Yale Youth Hockey Association funds 1 Season End Tournament.
Ice Slot Initiatives Throughout this past season I have developed successful working relationships with various rinks.

2014-2015 Season Program Orientation Ryan Hardy Director – Hockey Operations March 13, 2014
YYHA Subscribes to USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) Heavy emphasis on individual skill development (Skating, Passing, Puckhandling, Shooting,
etc.)
Our goal is to create a community-based organization where all of our member families can
Develop life-long friendships. From a hockey-specific standpoint, our goal is to create a culture where each member of the team is valued, our practices and games are organized, and our players are challenged, physically, socially, and emotionally to reach their potential as hockey players, athletes, and as people.
YYHA believes in USA Hockey’s focus on Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) – It is a
marathon, not a sprint! “One of the biggest problems in youth hockey is that we (as parents and players) compare ourselves to those around us, our teammates, which fosters selfishness and breeds mediocrity. Instead, let us measure ourselves against an standard of competence / perfection and challenge ourselves to be better today than we were
In an effort to provide all of our players access to exceptional coaching, all “A” and “A1”
Level Coaches will be Credentialed, Stipend/Paid, Non Parent Coaches (Exception U-12 / U-14 Girls). We have also designated all our “A” coaches at each level (Mite, Squirt, Pee- Wee, Bantam) Level Managers to insure consistent coaching and training methodologies. Many of our B Level Coaches are also Credentialed, Stipend/Paid, Non Parent Coaches.
In conjunction with our skill-based, program curriculum, which we will describe later in the
presentation, we have decided to make a change to our weekly Skills Sessions with Shaun
sessions are included in all YYHA Membership Fees. It is imperative that all YYHA members take part in these sessions.
At the Pee-Wee A/A1 and Bantam A/A1 levels, we will have an alternating, bi-weekly
practices where forwards and defenseman are split to work on skills specific to their position. More on this in later slides…
In selecting Head Coaches for the 2014- 2015 season, our committee was looking for energetic, passionate, men or women who were willing to work within the framework of the YYHA program-wide curriculum, as well as the ADM. We were looking for individuals who were role models to our players and who had the knowledge, background and acumen to challenge our players to reach their full
following Head Coaches for 2014-2015: NOTE: Biographies of all coaches can be found on the Yale Youth Hockey website: www.yaleyouthhockey.com
Our goal at the 2014-2015 Yale Youth Hockey Tryout is to place players on the appropriate team
for them to be successful in 2014-2015 and beyond. We ask you to trust us in this player placement process, as we promise to be transparent about the process and commit to eliminating any perceived “political” issues that often surround youth hockey tryouts
With the decision to place non-parent Head Coaches on all “A” and “A1” teams, and not select
Assistant Coaches from our parent coaching pool until after tryouts, we believe we have eliminated potential conflicts and insured a fair process.
Players will be selected by the Head Coach at their specific level, with oversight from YYHA
Hockey Director, Ryan Hardy.
Players will be selected on merit, after evaluation under the following criteria: Skating, Passing,
Puckhandling, Shooting, Competitiveness, and Hockey IQ.
Every year we have several “bubble players” competing for the final few spots. This year, instead
involve the previous year’s coaches, who can speak to a player’s competitiveness, dedication, coach-ability, and past behavior of the player and/or his or her parents. We feel this will lead us to the best selection of players for each team.
All Try-Out decisions are FINAL. For more in-depth information, please visit the website, click on
the Try-Out Process link under “Policies and Procedures”.
As in recent years, the Mites, under the direction of Shaun Hannah, will operate with USA
Hockey ADM-inspired, station-based practices.
Our focus at the Mite level is almost entirely on skill development, having fun, and learning
how to be part of a team.
The Mite Travel/House/Clinic level is the foundation for youth hockey, in addition to being the
foundation for our players to use hockey as a vehicle to develop life skills.
At the Try-Out, the Mite Travel and Mite House groups will be divided into two. In the Fall,
based on merit.
Mite Travel teams will have on average 2 practices per week and have access to YYHA
Skills/Powerskating Sessions and Goalies will have access to Skills Sessions conducted by ProCrease throughout the season.
Mite Travel will have 16-18 Home Game Ice Slots for Cross-Ice Games and Full-Ice Games
and reciprocal ice for away games. In accordance with USA Hockey’s ADM, Mite Travel teams will play Cross-Ice Games until the designated date, and then will be allowed to play 8 Full-Ice Games, per USA Hockey regulations. YYHA sponsors the CHC tournament, and
Squirt Practices will be 80-85% in accordance with USA Hockey recommendations, with a heavy
influence on individual skill development. The remaining 15-20% of practices will be in accordance with the YYHA Curriculum, designed to enrich the ADM.

cards to their Head Coach. YYHA believes good habits in the classroom translate to good habits
2014-15 Pee-Wee/Bantam Structure/Curriculum
We have been able to study different models of player development. From a domestic
standpoint, we have analyzed the Community-Based Model, such as the one used in Minnesota, as well as the Tier 1 Model that is used throughout much of the country. Due to the abundance of programs in the Northeast and specifically Connecticut, the Tier 1 Model in our view, is largely in-effective in the Northeastern United States.
We have not found any tangible evidence to support this Northeastern Tier 1 Model, below
the Bantam level, but do feel, that with a steady progression, such as the one outlined in the YYHA Curriculum from Clinic-Bantam, that enhanced competition could be beneficial at the Bantam level. In 2015-2016, we plan to offer a 2002 AAA option at the Bantam level, with a 2003 AAA option following in 2016-2017. We will continue to offer our Bantam A, A1 and B travel teams, as well.
