PRINCIPLES

  • Uphold the common good, continued human flourishing, even if it means

short-term sacrifice of public worship and piety

  • The Church must be good citizens, obeying lawful civic authority
  • Safeguard priests, deacons, and other liturgical ministers, many of whom are at-

risk for serious health issues

  • Keep church buildings open for private prayer, adoration, Sacrament of

Penance, but NO gatherings

  • Allow people to participate virtually in the Eucharist (which continues to be

celebrated) but also provide resources for families to pray at home (Mass readings, liturgy of the hours, spiritual Communion, etc.)

GENERAL GUIDANCE

(INCL RECENT UPDATES)

  • Gatherings of no more than TEN
  • Funerals, weddings, baptisms, etc.
  • Churches can remain OPEN for specified hours; signage to encourage “social

distancing”

  • Anointing, Reconciliation, Private/family prayer, Adoration (NOT Exposition)
  • Church to be LOCKED while Mass or any other potential gathering takes

place

  • Marriages MUST have license
  • General absolution ONLY in limited circumstances

PALM SUNDAY & PASCHAL TRIDUUM

  • Cannot be “transferred” to future
  • Assistance of other mins encouraged (esp. livestreaming)
  • Palm Sunday: Mass is to begin with the third form – blessing of palms is omitted.
  • Holy Thursday:
  • Mandatum and Eucharistic procession omitted
  • Encouraged to be celebrated in parish church, but permission for priests to celebrate

privately

PALM SUNDAY & PASCHAL TRIDUUM

  • Good Friday
  • Only in parish churches
  • Special intercession text
  • Easter

Vigil

  • Only in parish churches or cathedrals
  • No fire; just bless candle
  • Only required element of Baptismal Liturgy is renewal of promises
  • Easter Sunday
  • Can omit renewal of promises and recite Creed

  • Candidates can be received at any time
  • Preference for reception at Sunday Mass
  • Could be outside of Mass, with reception of Holy

  • Elect to be initiated within Mass
  • Preference for all Elect in the Archdiocese to be

initiated at the Pentecost Vigil if public liturgies are permitted at that time

  • Could be at another public celebration of the

Eucharist

  • Invite parish community to continue to pray
  • Intentionally accompany Elect and

candidates

  • One-on-one or in small virtual groups

  • Acknowledge disappointment and invite reflection on

the Paschal Mystery

  • Continue theological reflection through the Sunday

readings
