The Mandate:

Whitefish River First Nation Council authorized a survey to be conducted in the month of December 2017. The purpose of the survey was to determine if the Whitefish River First Nation citizens were willing to go forward with the development of a Whitefish River First Nation Custom Election Code; 78% of the Whitefish River First Nation citizens who took part in the survey responded “yes” to proceeding with the development of a Whitefish River First Nation Custom Election Code; In accordance with the wishes of the citizens, the Council of the Whitefish River First Nation established the Whitefish River First Nation Custom Election Code Working Group in May of 2018 to help develop the Whitefish River First Nation Custom Election Code.

The term of office for the position of chief and councillors would change from two years under the Indian Act, to three (3) or four (4)years; The term of office of the council may be extended under mitigating circumstances, beyond the three (3) term by unanimous resolution

A new Campaign Code of Ethics; Process for the removal of Council members from office: The chief or a councillor may be removed from office and be prevented from running for one term of office if he or she:

  • violates this law;
  • fails to attend three consecutive regular meetings of council without any reasonable

explanation;

  • has been convicted of an indictable offence during his or her term of office;
  • accepts or offers a bribe, forges a council document or otherwise acts dishonestly in his
  • r her role;
  • engages in such other conduct as may be determined by council to be of such a serious

nature that the removal is necessary and appropriate.
