Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡Club ¡Members ¡ Ø Undergraduate ¡minority ¡students ¡with ¡low-­‑to-­‑ middle ¡incomes. ¡ Ø Nontradi=onal ¡or ¡economically ¡disadvantaged, ¡ first ¡genera=on ¡college ¡students, ¡with ¡marginal ¡ Grade ¡Point ¡Averages, ¡marginal ¡science ¡grades, ¡ or ¡marginal ¡DAT ¡scores. ¡ ¡ Ø Many ¡work ¡full=me ¡while ¡aXending ¡college. ¡ ¡ Ø Tradi=onal ¡assessment ¡methods ¡used ¡by ¡dental ¡ school ¡admissions ¡personnel ¡were ¡viewed ¡as ¡a ¡ serious ¡challenge. ¡

Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡Club ¡Members ¡ Ø Many ¡of ¡their ¡parents ¡were ¡unemployed ¡due ¡ to ¡the ¡recent ¡economic ¡downturn ¡which ¡led ¡to ¡ extreme ¡financial ¡difficul=es. ¡ ¡ Ø Due ¡to ¡hardships, ¡the ¡students ¡joined ¡ together ¡and ¡sought ¡out ¡dental ¡faculty ¡willing ¡ to ¡advise, ¡counsel, ¡and ¡provide ¡direc=on ¡to ¡ them ¡in ¡their ¡quest ¡for ¡admission ¡into ¡dental ¡ school. ¡ ¡ Ø Faculty ¡advisors ¡became ¡commiXed ¡to ¡helping ¡ Pre-­‑Dental ¡students ¡in ¡their ¡pursuit ¡of ¡dental ¡ school ¡admission. ¡

Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡Strategies ¡ ¡ Ø Collaborate ¡with ¡admissions ¡personnel, ¡which ¡took ¡ into ¡considera=on ¡the ¡Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡students’ ¡ unique ¡situa=ons. ¡ Ø Curriculum ¡guidance ¡required ¡individual ¡counseling ¡ strategies. ¡ Ø Dental ¡school ¡faculty ¡advisors ¡worked ¡collabora=vely ¡ with ¡the ¡undergraduate ¡pre-­‑health ¡faculty ¡advisors ¡ to ¡structure ¡a ¡post-­‑baccalaureate ¡ac=on ¡program ¡ making ¡it ¡possible ¡for ¡students ¡to ¡achieve ¡the ¡ necessary ¡improved ¡GPA ¡considered ¡compe==ve ¡in ¡ the ¡admissions ¡process. ¡

  12. Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡Members ¡Eligibility ¡ Ø No ¡Minimum ¡GPA. ¡ Ø No ¡required ¡enrollment ¡at ¡UNLV. ¡ Ø No ¡restric=ons ¡on ¡eligibility. ¡ Ø Pay ¡a ¡nominal ¡membership ¡fee ¡and ¡ commit ¡to ¡con=nuing ¡their ¡college ¡ educa=on. ¡ ¡

Pre-­‑Dental ¡Society ¡Club ¡Members ¡ Ø Members ¡are ¡not ¡required ¡to ¡disclose ¡their ¡ GPA’s; ¡bring ¡leXers ¡of ¡recommenda=on; ¡or ¡any ¡ other ¡item ¡that ¡could ¡possibly ¡be ¡a ¡hurdle ¡to ¡ their ¡admission ¡into ¡the ¡Pre-­‑dental ¡program. ¡ ¡ Ø Dental ¡faculty ¡advisors ¡assess ¡students ¡specific ¡ deficiencies. ¡ Ø Members ¡lacking ¡compe==ve ¡science ¡grades ¡ are ¡provided ¡assistance ¡in ¡their ¡upper ¡division ¡ post-­‑baccalaureate ¡elec=ve ¡courses ¡to ¡improve ¡ their ¡GPA. ¡ ¡
