  2. Why Take Dual Credit? Many Benefits: • Learners may potentially earn between 3-60 hours of college credit for free o Junior & Senior year students can enroll in 1 to 4 courses per semester o Summer school can enroll in 1 to 4 courses o Early College Experience – Part time at CHS & Part time at NL • Dual Credit courses are awarded (Honors) Level 3 GPA points • Dual Credit Schedule can provide time & flexibility for learner o Example- Learners who are on M/W schedule have open study time T/TH/FRI o Online courses are also available

  3. Tuition Waiver Tuition is waived for courses on Coppell ISD pre-approved dual credit list - Books and additional materials are the learners responsibility Tuition is not waived for: • repeated courses (including previously failed dual credit courses) • courses that count for college credit only • college courses, when the course has been previously taken for high school credit (AP, Regular HS Class)

Example: 1) CHS Course 5) CHS Course How does it work? 2) CHS Course 6) CHS Course 3) CHS Course 7) CHS Course 4) DC Release 8) DC Release • Learners take courses on pre-approved list in the CHS Course Planning Guide • NL Fall & Spring Terms- Classes are held on M/W or T/Th or online • Summer courses M/T/W/Th or Online • Learners may be given an off period (release) for each course they are enrolled o Max time off campus is 2 class periods (example 1 & 5 or 4 & 8) o Learners must be at CHS for 3 consecutive periods per day o Other Options include Summer Classes and/or Early College Experience (seniors only) o Dual Credit is counted as a release period

  5. 2020-2021 CHS SCHEDULE Lunches in 3 rd & 7 th A - Day B - Day Time Period 1 5 8:50 - 10:23 A Lunch 12:04-12:34 2 6 10:31 - 12:04 B Lunch 12:39-1:09 C Lunch 1:14-1:44 3 7 12:12 - 2:29 4 8 2:37 - 4:10 Juniors or Seniors taking Fall or Spring NL classes: AM Dual Credit learners could be off CHS campus during periods 1 & 5 • PM Dual Credit learners could be off CHS campus during periods 4 & 8 • All juniors and seniors must be on CHS campus for at least 3 consecutive class periods per school day. Sophomores must attend CHS classes for 8 periods and are not given a release period. Dual Credit learners can not be off campus during 2nd, 3rd, 6th or 7th periods. They must be on CHS campus 3 consecutive periods.

Grades/Transcripts ● Learners receive high school credit for a dual credit course if they earn a grade of A, B, or C. ● All dual credit courses taken for high school credit will be recorded on the high school transcript as a numerical grade and will be included in the GPA calculation as a (Honors) Level 3 course. ● Learners should be aware that taking college classes concurrently while in high school results in the establishment of a collegiate academic record and learners earn a college grade point average. ● Learners must submit an official North Lake transcript to any institution where admission is sought.

  10. Who makes a good candidate for Dual Credit? Learners who: are mature, organized and responsible. • have good study habits. • are motivated and self starters. • do not need reminders regarding assignment and project deadlines. • have their own transportation. •

  11. What are additional considerations? Late work almost never accepted by professors • Syllabus expected to be followed without reminders • Professors do not communicate with parents • North Lake holiday schedule does not always aligns with CISD holiday schedule • Learner extracurricular activities and other absences not excused • Accelerated 8 week and online courses need to be considered carefully • Repercussions for failing grades include: • Academic Probation o Failed course on permanent record o May not be eligible to take dual credit courses the next semester o

  12. How do you qualify and enroll in Dual Credit?

  13. Have you already taken Dual Credit? If you have already taken Dual Credit you do not need to re-register. Check the pre-approved Dual Credit Classes in the CHS Course Planning Guide ● Notify your CHS counselor which class(es) you would like to take during your 1:1 meeting ● Review exemption ● Math & English exemptions are different ○ Update Shot Records ● Summer Classes - Meningitis shot must have been given after August 2015. ○ Fall Classes - Meningitis shot must have been given after December 2015 ○ ensure that it is not expiring within 6 months ○ Updated CHS Transcript will need to be sent to North Lake. ●

  14. Checklist First time Dual Credit Students Students first step is notifying CHS Counselor which Dual Credit Course(s) they plan on taking during their 1:1 planning meeting. Page 1 of packet: Please check off list as you complete it. ● This checklist must be signed by parent ● and student verifying that you have included all the requested information.

Finalizing registration Completed Registration Packets due by April 1, 2020 ● Enrollment forms are due to CHS/CHS 9 Counselors by April 15, 2020 ● Dual Credit Courses (Online at North Lake or On Campus at North Lake) Depending on the amount of students enrolling in specific courses, North ● Lake will create CHS class sections...therefore section numbers may not be required and specific teachers may not be requested.
