WHAT IS DUAL CREDIT?
- Dual credit means two things are happening at once. Students
are earning high school credit while also earning college credit.
- Dual credit courses are taught at the college level. Expect the
class to be rigorous
DUAL CREDIT
- Dual credit registration for spring 2020 has begun. Download
packet from the counselor website or pick up a hard copy in the front office
- Be sure to meet all deadlines and follow instructions exactly
as provided
- Must meet TSI standards or exemption
WHAT IS TSI?
- TSI is the Texas Success Initiative and is used to determine college readiness
- The TSI test consists of reading, writing, and math section and is untimed
- Students MUST complete TSI prep before testing is allowed
- Students are given one opportunity per semester to test at NBHS at no cost
- If qualifying scores are met, students may enroll in dual credit courses
- If qualifying scores are not met, students may retest at the Alamo Colleges for a fee.
WHAT ARE TSI EXEMPTIONS?
- SAT Score of 480+ on Reading/Writing and 530+ on Math
- ACT Composite Score of 23+ with at least a 19 in English and a 19 in Math
- Students must provide a copy of scores to Mrs. Burton
- Students will need to order a copy of scores directly from College Board or ACT to send
to San Antonio College
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CREDIT WILL BE ACCEPTED AT A 4 YEAR UNIVERSITY?
- Access tccns.org to compare San Antonio College with the university you plan to
attend to ensure credits will transfer
- Credits earned may apply as electives if not required for the degree
- Out of state and private universities may not be listed on TCCNS
- Check with the admission department of prospective universities to verify credits
will transfer if needed
WHICH DUAL CREDIT COURSE SHOULD I TAKE?
- Start with the end goal in mind. Look at degree plans for the universities of interest and
see if any required courses may be satisfied with dual credit.
- Think about academic strengths and weaknesses when selecting courses.
- Remember this starts the college transcript, so don’t enroll for more than can be
successfully managed.
- Keep in mind out of school obligations such as work, practice, etc. and ensure students
have ample time to keep up with academic demands.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT VS DUAL CREDIT
- Both may be accepted by colleges/universities
- With AP
, there are no testing requirements for enrollment in a class
- AP college credit is based on the AP exam score at the end of the year
- With Dual Credit, acceptance is based on TSI scores and meeting all deadlines for
application
- College credit based on performance throughout the year, not one exam
- College rules and deadlines apply
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
- Dual credit classes start the college transcript
- Dual credit is a commitment to follow college deadlines, rigor, and rules
- Dual credit classes are free to students, but there may be text book costs
- Grading guidelines are strictly enforced, and there is no opportunity for retesting
- Think and plan carefully when selecting courses
- Students who are currently enrolled for dual credit only need to complete the course
selection page in the packet and return to the front office
