Conclusions

  • Increase of the German trade balance 2000-

2003 cannot be attributed to a single shock.

  • The persistently high German trade balance

can be interpreted as a sequence of shocks that bosted the current account.

  • Unless there are further shocks moving the

trade balance upward we expect a gradual decline of the German current account surplus.
