What is special education?

  • The purpose of special education in the public

schools is to “Identify and support actions necessary to promote the appropriate and positive involvement of students with disabilities in the total school program… Develop a collaborative approach to service delivery which includes parental involvement… and may include supports such as psychology, guidance, counseling, social work, speech/language, and health services.”

My child has an IEP.

  • If your child has already been

identified to receive special education services, those services may be provided in the general education classes, or may require that a student receives instruction in a small group or individual setting.

My child has an IEP.

  • The recommendations of the

student’s IEP (Individual Educational Plan) will dictate how those services are implemented. You were invited to be a member of the PPT team (Planning and Placement Team) that created that IEP at the initial or annual PPT meeting.

Who will support my child?

  • In addition to a special education

teacher, each grade level also has a special education paraprofessional who may be in your child’s classes to provide support.

  • Some students may require a greater

level of support from a shared or

  • ne/one paraprofessional. This is also

based on the recommendations of the IEP.

Who will support my child?

  • If your child’s IEP requires that they

receive additional services such as counseling, speech/language, OT or PT a qualified provider will also have designated hours of service either in the general education setting or a resource room.

What is a parent’s role?

  • As a parent, your active participation is

important to the success of your child.

  • You should know who your child’s case

manager is, and understand the annual goals for your child.

  • Ask questions and always feel free to

reach out with concerns or provide us with input.

  • No one knows your child better than you
