➜ Moodle is like the ‘homebase’ for all students to access their home learning. ➜ It is password protected and every child has their own login information. This will be given via the reading diary. ➜ Students can access the Year 2 home page, Spelladrome, Mathletics, Sunshine Online and MyiMaths via Moodle so there is no need for parents to try to remember many different websites this year.

Moodle

Moodle is an

personalised learning platform that can be used in school and at home. Most Year 2 students will already be familiar with Moodle from Year 1.

Reading Homework

Reading every day helps children to develop their communication skills, develop logical thinking skills, master language, enhance concentration, build family bonds and also develop a love for reading.

➔ First, the task has a clear academic purpose, such as practice, checking for understanding, or applying knowledge or skills. ➔ Second, the task efficiently demonstrates student learning. ➔ Third, the task promotes ownership by offering choices and being personally relevant. ➔ Fourth, the task instills a sense of competence. ➔ Last, the task is aesthetically pleasing—it appears enjoyable and interesting (Vatterott, 2009).

Spelling Homework

The Fundamental Five The best homework tasks exhibit five characteristics

SLIDE 8

➔ Monday: Children are taught a new spelling rule in class and given their spelling list. At home, they choose one activity to complete from a list of fun activities. ➜ Tuesday: Children write three ‘super sentences’. Each sentence should include at least one word from their spelling list. ➜ Wednesday: Spelladrome task. ➜ Thursday: Return the homework. ➜ Friday: Spelling list check-up in class.

➜ Each week your child will be given a task to complete on Mathletics. ➜ Mathletics is personalised to your child’s own level. ➜ On average, once per month, your child will be given an additional maths challenge to complete. This will come in written form via their maths homework folder. ➜ You will also have access to MyiMaths although we will not be setting homework via this in Term 1.

➜ From time to time your child will be given a homework task related to their current IPC unit. ➜ It may be a simple task such as remembering to bring their toothbrush to school. ➜ It may be a more involved project, such as conducting personal home research about a particular topic or concept. ➜ We will inform parents of any IPC homework tasks in advance via the reading diary.
