  3. History Army Cadets in Georgetown dates back to 1916 as part of the ► Halton District School Board high school curriculum. The 676 was restarted in 1973 with help from our founding ► and current sponsor the Georgetown Optimist Club. Army Cadets is a free program for youth 12-18. ► Core activities are free  Uniforms are on loan to you at no charge.  Optional Activities do cost cadets but are often subsidized  by the Support Committee. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  4. What can you expect Learn new skills and confidence in a safe and challenging environment. ► Participate in activities you will not find in any other program. ► There is zero tolerance for any kind of violence, harassment or abuse in the Cadet program. ► New and senior cadets must complete 6 hours of harassment and abuse prevention instruction to be delivered every fall. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  5. Our program There are 4 fundamental aspects of the ► Army Cadet program Physical Fitness  Leadership Development  Outdoor Adventure Experiences  An understanding of the Canadian Armed Forces  It is a youth program lead and delivered by youth. ► Year 3 Cadets and above teach in the classroom and in the field  Senior cadets acquire valuable teaching leadership and organizational skills  There is a standard curriculum that is a mix of classroom instruction and practical ► application. Wednesday nights are instruction and drill.  One weekend per month is practical field experience.  www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  10. Summer Camps 1 st year cadets attend for 2 or 3 weeks ► 2 nd year cadets attend for 3 weeks and can select from: ► Marksmanship  Music – Pipes & Drums instruction  Leadership / Drill and Ceremony  Sports and Fitness  Expedition  Nationally there are only spots for 1 in 3 cadets. ► Selection for camps is based on attendance (minimum 60%). Cadets require a minimum of a Bronze Fitness to attend most summer camps and all advanced programs. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  11. Advanced Programs Cadets are graded and ranked during their career and may become ► eligible for advanced camps and international exchanges. The Rocky mountain ACSTC is the elite training centre for Army Cadets. ► Only 200 attend from across Canada and the UK. The 676 sends 1-2 cadets each year. The Army Cadet program also offers the Canadian Armed Forces ► parachute course to the top 30 Army Cadets from across Canada each summer. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  12. Advanced Programs Cadets are also eligible to apply for international exchanges in the Germany, England, ► Australia, South Korea, Cayman Islands, Wales and the US. In 2015 the 676 sent 1 cadet to Australia, In 2016 we send 3 cadets to Scotland/Wales/France/Belgium Cadets that have attended summer camp may also become Staff Cadets at age 16. ► Staff Cadets are paid approximately $3600 for the summer. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  13. Uniforms All Cadets will be provided with 2 uniforms on loan free of charge. ► A dress uniform  Field training uniform issued to 2 nd year cadets and above  Your uniform will be issued after week 4 provided we have sufficient ► stock The uniform can be exchanged free of charge as your Cadet grows ► Some cadets will have to wait for their entire Uniform, we have a limited ► uniform budget. All uniform parts must be returned when a Cadet leaves the program. ► It costs over $700 to outfit a new Cadet with their uniforms ► It cost over $2000 to outfit a senior Cadet who wear Kilts ► sashes and glens www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  14. Uniforms After 6 weeks of non attendance, you can expect weekly calls requesting the ► return of the uniform. If you can’t drop it off we will gladly come pick it up ► 30% of parents never return the uniform ► www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  15. Our Expectations We also understand family events, sickness and school work may keep you away ► from time to time. Please inform your Sgt when you are not able to attend and email us by clicking on the absence tab on the front page of the website. We expect that you will participate in all mandatory events. ► Parents are welcome to come into the gym at the end of the night and watch the ► closing parade. We do insist that all parents will be on time to pick up your kids. ► Pick up is no later than 9:15 on Wednesdays and at the time scheduled on the ► weekend event forms. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  16. Our Expectations Being a Cadet is a commitment not unlike being on a Hockey team. Attendance is very ► important to ensure the group works well. A minimum of 60% attendance is required to be successful in the program. You ► cannot advance to the next star level or participate in Optional events such as our Quantico Washington trip or summer camps without it. When you commit to attending a weekend exercise or summer camp by submitting the ► permission form, our expectation is that you will show up. Food has been purchased and supplies and equipment rented based on the number of Cadets indicating they will be there. Even though the event is free to you, somebody somewhere has paid all your expenses for the weekend. For high demand events like summer camps and trips, there are a limited number of ► spots. A last minute cancellation or a no show means a spot goes unfilled that could have gone to a cadet who wanted it www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  17. Attendance If your cadet does not attend for 3 consecutive weeks you will receive a call asking ► your intentions if your child will be continuing with the program. If your child does not attend for 6 consecutive weeks you will receive a call requesting ► that you please return all issued uniforms. www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  18. Keeping you informed What the Army Cadet program has to offer can be quite confusing. At the 676 we have 6 main methods of communication about our program Our Website www.georgetownarmycadets.ca will be your main source of ► information about our program. Our weekly call home is made on Monday or Tuesday nights and will detail dress ► requirements, upcoming events and permission forms that are due Email – used as required to update parents on important information ► Our bulletin board located in the Armoury, this board has upcoming events and ► all forms. Our newsletter published in the spring and fall ► Letters home to parents ► www.georgetownarmycadets.ca

  19. What do I need? The Cadet program will supply most of what you need. There ► are a few things we recommend you do purchase A good quality sleeping bag. Sleeping bags are not provided ► on Corps level exercises. We recommend a sleeping bag rated to -15c. If are going to be participating in weekend exercises over the course of your Cadet career, it will be a worthwhile investment. A hands free personal hydration system capable of carrying at ► least 1 litre of water is mandatory for all field training exercises Optional clothing ► Jacket  Hoodie  Track Pants  Extra T shirt  www.georgetownarmycadets.ca
