Meet Katherine Johnson...

@stemettes | #stemillions Meet Her: Katherine is a mathematician who contributed to the US space programs with the early application

  • f computers at NASA. She calculated the

trajectories and back-up return paths for the early NASA missions and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the

  • Moon. Her calculations were critical to the success
  • f these missions. Katherine also did the

calculations for the mission to Mars.

Choose one of these 2 options:

MAKE: use sweets to create a scale model of the solar system

(slides 7-10).

  • r

EXPLORE: make a wall display of the 8 phases of the moon

(slides 11-14).

MAKE

@stemettes | #stemillions

Create a scale model of the solar system

  • ut of sweets.

Remember to take a photo of your solar system before you eat it all!

BONUS: ★ Include the sun and all the moons from each planet if you have time. ★ Can you find out the distance between each planet as well?

EXPLORE

@stemettes | #stemillions

FACT: There are 8 different phases of the moon. Get into groups of two or

  • three. In your groups you

will be making a poster all about the different phases

  • f the moon.

EXPLORE

@stemettes | #stemillions

On a computer, go to bit.ly/024explore Try to find the following information: ★ What is the name of each phase? ★ Why does this phase happen? ★ At what point in the lunar cycle does this phase happen? (Beginning, middle, end) ★ What does ‘waning’ and ‘waxing’ mean?

@stemettes | #stemillions

Now you’ve done the research, make a poster or wall display to explain all of the information you found
