  3. Big Picture Overview ● The Diploma Program (DP) is a program for students in grades 11 and 12. ● At the end of tenth grade (MYP Year 5) students will select the degree to which they want to participate in the diploma program. ● DP courses are two years in length and are comprehensive. ● DP courses are offered in standard level (SL) and higher level (HL). ● The International Baccalaureate (IB) has clearly defined expectations in all aspects of their program.

  4. Options After the MYP Years ibo.org/contact-the-ib/media-inquiries/ 1.) MUHS believes in IB for all students. For this reason all students must complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. Some students may choose to earn their remaining credits by successfully completing MUHS Core classes. 2.) Students may select to take DP courses to earn MUHS credit but not an IB certificate. These students must complete all requirements within the course but are not required to complete the internal or external assessments for IB.

  5. Options After the MYP Years ibo.org/contact-the-ib/media-inquiries/ 3.) Students may elect to take DP courses but not declare themselves as a diploma candidate. Students taking part in DP courses can earn IB certificates in each course. They must complete all the testing within each course, including all internal and external IB assessments. 4.) Students may elect to enroll as a full diploma candidate. As a diploma candidate they are required to complete all IB assessments in each class and the IB Core (more on this later).

  6. Full Diploma Candidate Requirements ● Students studying for the full diploma are required to select one course from each of the six academic areas. ● A student may choose to not take a class from the sixth academic area (The Arts), in doing so they can elect to study a second subject from one of the other areas. It is required that three subjects be taken at the higher level (HL) ● and three subjects at the standard level (SL). A student may elect to take four HL courses along with two SL ● courses. Almost all DP courses are two years in length. ● Full diploma students must also successfully complete a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, complete 200 hours in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and write an extended essay (EE).

  7. The Core (TOK, CAS, and EE) 1.) Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is an interdisciplinary course designed to help students question and understand how they know what they know. Students study how individuals from various disciplines view the world in order to develop their own ways of thinking. By simulating analysis of knowledge across disciplines, TOK seeks to help students make sense of school and the world. 2.) Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is an experiential learning component of the DP. Students complete a wide variety of extracurricular, community service and athletic options to fulfill this requirement. Each of these components of the core have a built in reflection requirements which students must complete.

  8. The Core (continued) 3.) The extended essay introduces students to the demands and rewards of independent work. Emphasis is placed on doing personal research and communicating ideas effectively. Students write a 4,000-word essay in an area of personal interest. The extended essay process begins during their junior year when students are matched with content area teachers. This teacher will be their supervisor of the entire process. The topic of the student’s essay relates to the teacher’s area of expertise. The extended essay is submitted to the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) during the first half of the student’s senior year.

  9. IB Assessments in DP Courses www.facultyfocus.com/articles/educational-assessment/student-written-ex ams-increase-student-involvement/ ● All DP courses are clearly described by the IBO, this includes depth and breadth of content to be covered. ● Each course has two to three IB internal assessments (IAs) which are assessed using the IB rubrics. Scores are based on a 1 - 7 scale. Ultimately, these scores are converted to a percentage score. ● A random sample of IAs are sent into the IB for double scoring, teachers receive feedback on their assessment of students. ● Each course also has an external assessment, these are completed at the end of the second year and are assessed by the IBO.

  10. ● Subjects are not taught in isolation ● The IB encourages critical thinking ● It encourages breadth and depth of learning ● Graduates are globally minded ● It encourages you to become a confident and independent learner ● It increases academic opportunity, colleges and universities respect DP courses. College credit is given for DP courses depending on the student’s IB score.

  11. In closing ……………… ● This was a lot of information, feel free to write questions on cards out in the cafeteria. We will be responding to your questions with an email. ● There will be an information night for 10th grade students and parents/guardians interested in entering 11th grade as a DP candidate in the spring of 2019.
